I do not dislike the 180's they are an excellent round, I use them in heavy brush at close ranges in a round nose corelock. But the 150 with its excellent ballistic and longer ranges can not be beat!!

I cannot be the only one using hand-load 125 gr. soft points.

I admit I cheated by putting a Montana Rifleman ® barrel on my gun, mostly to rid myself of the vastly oversize chamber.
This doubled the life of my brass.

My most recent Mule Deer was taken at 325 yards, hit him within an inch of my point of aim.
If I can ever duplicate that shot, I want to have a witness, of course I will have to win the hunt tag lottery again first.

The 125 gr. bullet has enough zip to pass through a deer, so why punish yourself with a heavier bullet unless you are hunting very large or thick skinned game?
At over $3.00 a gallon for gas, I want it leaded, 100 octane, and my windshield washed!

I hear you on the rebarreling ! My Barrel Guy does a excellent .303 barrel (as well as most of the Old .303 based converstions ) Most of my work with the 123-125gn 311-312 projectiles is with my .310 cadet ,though I have played round with them in the .303 at times with good results .

I Use Sprinter Arms Barrels. As did my Father before me . Their a little company up in the Adelaide hills & have gone from Father to son . They stock reamers for many types of 303 convertions.

Are those available here in the states? I use Walther barrels made in Germany. But I have been wanting another manufacturer to try.

Hey
am new to the forum.

I just got a lee enfield .303 no4 mk1 sporterized a bit.

Today me and a friend shoot it for the first time with 2 kind of ammo and i got a question about the bullet weight.

We first shot some 150 grain solf point, one each and i never shot rifle before this. We both got like 1 ft away of the paper target at like 150 ft away of it.

Then we both shot with some Super-x 180 grain Power Point and both got pretty close to the middle of the target "like 2-4 inch from center"

We shot 1 Cartridge of each weight each. We shoulda have shot more but no ammo to waste.

Is that normal or is that us that was bad for our first shot with it?.

Also what would be the best for moose hunt, Federal 150 grain soft point or Winchester Super-X 180 grain power point? Or you suggest anything else?

Will be first moose hunt, also i am not used to these rifle, i have no idea what ammo to use,  i may try again the 150 grain later.

Thanks you :)

Mathieu

Well-first thing you should do i tell us WHERE you are!
Not tryin to be a goof-but location tells us alot.
Now-I hunt with .303 British..I would use NOTHING else.I bin offered alternates. No thanks...
Now-Last year was my 1st year with my new moose group. They sized me up pretty quick..askd me point blank'CAN YOU GIVE ME A KILL SHOT @180-200 YDS IN THIS MARSH?"
I held up my NoI MkIII* leaned forward & said 180 grain.
I was put in the catch spot as he came out of the pond.
The guy next to me took 5 shots to take it down(I counted 1 hit) he was 25 yds away!
Anyway-180 gr for big stuff..150 for deer, boyo
