I was telling Shamu the other day my cousin gave me a full box (why to they only put 48 rounds in a box?) of .303 INCH, D.I. MkVIIz ammunition. It has 1944 DI Z on the rim. I'm going to use it at the range next season and hope it's Boxer not Berdan so I can reload it.

I've heard many strange, & some believable, tales for the apparently random packaging of 32 or 48 rounds. One was that was how many they could fit in the existing wood crates designed for an earlier British Service round for the old Martini rifles. Another was because a standard drill of 2 warming & fouling, 10 rounds "grouping" (shoot for smallest group anywhere on the target), ten rounds "application" (shoot for highest score correcting for each shot), & finally ten rounds "snap" (rapid target acquisition of a small target presented for a short time in slightly differing places) used one complete box. You could not keep partial boxes they had to be consumed on the firing point. |

HT, if the ammo has been stored properly, there is a very good chance it is still good. I have a fair bit of Defense Industries (DI) 1943 Mk VIIz. It is boxer primed. I think I have a box or two of the DI 1944 as well. This is excellent brass for reloading.
I had read once that the box size was originally made for a 40 rounds on a cloth belt. In any case, it holds 4 rows of 12 cartridges in the box, you can’t get the two additional rounds in there and then get the boxes to stack and fit right in the wood box. BTW, I’d expect that these original 48 round cartons are collectible if not opened. |
