I picked up a sporterized enfield No. 4 Mk1* for 100 dollars.  On the side there looks to be solder over top of 3 screw holes where the front scope pad should be.  The rear pad is on and it looks like someone tried to remove it with no luck.  Below are links to pictures of the gun.  Any insight would be great.  I believe this rifle is marked with an S, with alot of other markings stamped onto the barrel, but I can't find any webpage that tells what they are.  I was wondering if any of these rifles came with scopes besides the T.  I want to put a scope on this rifle, should I use the existing pad or get a whole new one on.

To the best of my knowledge, the only no.4's that came with scopes were the T's.
I've been known to be wrong... but fear not, someone will correct me!!

The square S indicates Savage manufacture. There is a web site in the "Links" that will help with the markings. Those scope mounts aren't Enfield, I don't recognize them. I'd try to find the same thing so you don't have to make any other modifications. Does anyone recognize the hole pattern?
Also it looks like it has an earlier cocking piece, I'd look it over carefully to make sure it has all the right parts.

Good call, and would appear one of the mounting plates is still attached
Hard to tell through pics I went over to a buddies place and much to he disliking we ended up taking the mount off of his (T) and save for the shiny bits(where the solder or tinning) is on yours looks bout the same.

Although it could have been in the hands of someone trying to make a re-pop (T)

There are some tell tails, does it have the typical button style cocking piece, or TR on the left hand side of the butt socket?

Where is the "S" and is it by itself or is there a 51 next to it?

The S is by its self.  There are alot of markings on the barrel, none that match anything i've seen so far.  I've tried to take pictures of them, but they don't come out to well here are some more pictures of the gun.  It has what looks like the factor or close to factory cheek rest.  I never though of someone trying to make it a (T) but why would they use a sporterized stock and then use the cheek rest.

Well, he reason I say making a (T) is typically the (T)'s didn't have the 90 degree battle sight.  As for the check rest it's basically a requirement for the taller scope mounts in order to maintain proper eye relief.
Other things aren't adding up, the rubber recoil pad, the sporter stock...etc

I can't tell from your picks but has the barrel been free floated?

All in all doesn't means some idiot didn't hack up a T

Check out this link maybe hold some answers for you
