I looked for a sticky for this, but did not see one; my apologies if this is answered elsewhere on the forum.
I don't usually buy bayonets (or any other C&R, for that matter) with overt amounts of rust on them. Condition is paramount to me, however, I could not resist bidding on this M1917 Winchester. It was one of those auctions where you are at work, bid with alot of time left, and expect to get sniped out at the end ... but you don't.  Shocked  I was probably more surprised than the last guy who'd bid just before me (sorry if it was anybody here ... Confused). So, how does one remove rust like as shown in the pictures and not damage the value of the piece ?
 Here it is at present:

One of these days I'll remember to actually separate the pics ...

Gentlemen, your experienced advice will be greatly appreciated. This is the rarest piece of my collection.

Well-I had some experience with this.I took pics a while back of "before" & then "after" for a bayo belonging to a Kropatschak rifle I wish to restore.(I'd post the pics but I'm a technosaur & dont know how)
My G/F's son is a museum curator & has connections. He soaked the bayo for damn near a year in some kinda stuff. It did wonders-but it didnt come back perfect. It was-to be honest-ALOT worse than yours.I'll attempt to get the skinny on the stuff, but I'm betting its not available to the general public

Much appreciated. I have recently seen reference to a product called "wonder blue" or " blue wonder": does anyone have any firsthand knowledge of this product?

It's an old trick but it does work well. Soak the bayo in some cheap coke a cola. It contains mild phosphoric acid. It's been proved it doesn't rot teeth but it sure cleans copper and metals.Submerge the blade in the coke for starters leave it for 48 hours and see what happens.  It may take some time and patience plus a little judicious rubbing with 0000 grade steel wool but it won't remove the stampings or do any damage.

post note: After the soaking & rubbing part is complete..look for a product called "PEEK".Its a clay based metal cleaner/polish.(I gave a tube to Rhino & Cookie)This stuff is awesome!(You can actually see your reflection in barrel of my civil war Enfield). It removes any remaining dirt & crud & leaves a very clean shine/look.
(For SEVERE rust I'd start with Naval Jelly-but you dont have that kind of rust)

Is it something like FLITZ ? I have a tube of FLITZ around here somewhere ... I used to use it to remove firing rings from the front of the cylinder of some of my display revolvers.

I would start off with 0000 steelwool and a fine gun oil. will remove rust only and not damage the steel. If that does not work there is other steps.

I've heard of using brass or bronze wool but haven't been able to locate any. Can anybody tell me who carries it?

Ok, here are my initial results. Sorry about the huge pics: didn't realize I had the resolution up so high.
I could never find brass wool or copper wool, but these are still not bad results for a 36-hr soak in Coke and 30 mins with a ScotchBrite pad. Not bad for a $100 Winchester ... Tongue

The rest:

I must say that I could hardly be more pleased with the results, seeing how little effort actually went into it. I'll work on that bad place on the spine later this week; it actually does not seem to be pitted underneath and should buff off quite well with the ScotchBrite pad. Thanks, guys: I knew that this would be the place to come to get the answer.  Star

That's a shame...That rust looks recent! It's bright Brown, not dark or crusty. Hopefully it's just surface rust.
Poor storage on the part of the last owner I suppose. Most likely his garage or wet basement. Cry
