First what ammo that is cheap but accurate could i shoot out to 800+ yards and kill a deer?
Second what might I have to do to my gun (7.62x51 2a1 Enfield) To make it up to the task?
Also what other Information might i need to know to shoot accurate shots at very long ranges?

For 800 yard shots in the kill zone of a Deer sized animal you'd need to use a matchgrade bullet that also maintained some ability to expand or tumble in the body.
While you often see heavy long bullets used for long range shooting, the British have had good results at extreme ranges with boat tail bullets of 144 grains and 155 grains at moderate velocities.
At 800 yards velocity and energy will have dropped significantly, and you aren't likely to make a clean kill at that range. There would not be enough shock tranmitted to the animals nervous system.
Deer are well known for their ability to run great distances after their heart has stopped beating.
Its a natural part of their fight or flight symdrome. The circulatory system clamps down using internal pressures on the arteries to force oxygenated blood to the brain and vital organs.
At this sort of range you'd need to anchor the animal by breaking bones or severing the spine.
The Shoulder of the Deer is thickly padded with connective tissue to absorb the shock of bounding through the forest and making long leaps. Theres not as much bone there as you'd expect, and what there is would be very flexible.
While you could fatally wound a Deer at 800+ yards, its not considered to be very humane or sporting to risk a wounded animal disappearing into the bush to die later on.

Shooting deer at 800 yards is not humane. 100-250 yards is a maximum using soft nosed ammo to cause hydrostatic shock. Anything over that is a definate NO NO. Bullet placement is everything when deer hunting chest shots take out the heart and lungs neck shots breaking the spinal cord cause instant death a bullet placed just behind the shoulder will rip the heart and lungs giving a near instant kill. I suggest you read up on deer hunting check the regulations pertinent to your area and chat to local hunters save yourself being prosecuted by the ASPCA.

I want to strongly discourage you from thinking that the answer to this question is just a question of finding different ammunition. As was earlier said, a humane kill requires that the deer be anchored... and at 800 yards, unless you can find some kind of science-fiction exploding-tip ammo for your .308, I really don't think that you'll be able to do it.
The question isn't whether the deer ends up dead... I don't doubt that even regular FMJ could accomplish that. But it would be at the cost of unnecessary suffering to the creature and the tremendous likelihood that you'd never even find it after the deer -- with its 800-yard head start -- sprints away into the brush to bleed to death. |

Also I am not just asking about ammo I am askng about every thing that would need to be done if anything. To tha rifle (308 enfield) and what ammo to buy... Have a question ask but I think you got it now
So thank you, and keep posting! |

As you want to use the same ammo of hunting as well as target shooting I suggest the 308 150 grain speer soft points and load your own ammunition within tolerances for the enfield. Then you know 1 it isn't going to screw up your rifle and 2 the weapon is zeroed for that particular bullet so you don;t have to waste time and effort sighting in again.

I would not take that shot ..its called stalking to get a better shot ..closer ..that makes the hunt more exciting any how !!! I have seen a 900 Meter shot on an ACP with 7.62x51 mm at night (Weapon used ...M-60 ) ...so I could see the tracer rounds as they made the trajectory very clear, and the arc of the trajectory was very large. the shot can be made but Like Tony said that would be in Human to take that shot ...To many variables , not to mention the loss of the hydrostatic shock to the animals system ..and would most certainly lead to a wounded and lost animal = Waist !!! As our Battalion Commander said of the 900 meter shot ...All You did was tick Him off ..and give Your position away to early ......... |

I know of only one person that shoots a 308/7.62 nato at 800 yards (900 and 1000 also) and he competes in Palma Matches and he uses the 155 grain Palma bullet.

I'd say there is no real answer to this question.
With each rifle being different, (even two new out of the box Weatherby supersomethingorothers will be different) you'd have to buy a bunch of different loads and test them in your 2A1 to see which works best. THEN .... buy as many boxes from that batch as you can/can afford.
