For fast shooting at close range (bear charging) I've tried using the protective ears for the front sight as a sort of front aperature. Works well enough for sudden, split-second, close-in work.

I would swap it out for a sight that has the  elevation adjustments from 100 to 1300 and put the  L type sight in the Enfield parts box.

Here are the paths for Mk VII ball with 300 & 600 yd zeroes.
 
.303 British trajectory notes. (#4 MkII Lee Enfield with factory iron sights at 1.3" Above bore.)
174Gr Mk VII ball. (filler type bullet)
MV 2450 FPS BC = 0.377 (calculated) SD = 0.257 (calculated)
300 yd zero

Or you can put in a different height front sight to adjust the elevation a bit.

Basically you can't. Its set dead on at 300 or 600 everything else you use "Kentucky elevation". This assumes you are zeroed and using MkVII ammo BTW.
One of the on-line ballistics calculators will give you the hold off as long as you punch in the info for whatever bullet you are using, the sight height above bore & select a 300 (or 600) yd zero.
