Recently acquired a very nice Enfield No2 MkI in .38 S&W with hammer spur intact.  Side-plate stamped 1938, and also stamped "R.A.F." on the side.  I assume this was issued to RAF pilots or flight officers in the late 1930's?  It's in pristine condition with original grips, also in excellent condition.

Most similar ones that I see have the "bobbed" hammer, never see one with the hammer spur intact.  Anyone know what the realistic value is on this pistol?

Thanks,  --728shooter

R.A.F. Flight crews were not issued side arms. Niether were R.C.A.F.
The WWII issue of sidearms to aircrew seems to be an American thing, didn't seem to be prevalent in Commonwealth forces.
Having said that, I'm sure there were instances whereby it was deemed necessary.
I brought that very question to some RAF vets, not very long ago. They all said "No,It just wasn't done."

Probably true.
I was RAF later on & the only time we were issued a sidearm was when there was when there was an extreme chance of being stuck somewhere "really nasty" if forced down.

We got P-35 Browning hi powers.
Totally useless inside a jet aircraft.Cry

I hear they issued Walther PPK's to RAF in Desert Shield/Storm. The running joke was that you wouldn't shoot an Arab or camel with a .380 as it would just get them mad. What you did was to trade the PPK for a camel & escape on the camel as the Arab would think a PPK was a real gun!Wink
