Aren't war movies great!
Sometimes the errors are not small details! the film about the capture of the Enigma machine from a U boat had it as an American Navy exploit; but it was in fact the Royal Navy!
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

Funny thing is sometimes they get it right when you don't expect it!

In "The Mummy Returns" the bit with the brother & girlfriend sniping from the ridge over the cannibal mummys the rifles are a sweet Lee's speed & a no1 target rifle.

For a while I had the exact same hard case he drags it through the swamps in!Confused

I saw that movie on the enigma, choked with inaccuracies. Nobody mentioned the two that were captured by the Poles early in the 1939 war period. Or the Polish mathamaticans that also contributed to the "Machine" development. Or If my memory fails me the several that were captured  by the British  before Dunkirque and from u boats. one of them might have been delivered by French underground forces as well.

Certainly at least one was captured from a u boat by the  U.S. Navy

Some commercial enigmas were simply bought as it was a business security system pre war. Like most things the Nazi's just took something already existing & made it their own.

The U505 was captured by the Americans in 1944 and is now on display.

The British captured the U110 in 1941.

This thread is a classic example of what I like about this forum. From a chap asking a question about opinions as to what value his MLE has... to meandering onto the thoughts about who did or did not and when... capture a WW2 ENIGMA coding machine! The best part is....  it all happens in the same thread!

Superb...  simply superb. Utter genius!  Handshake
This is MY rifle, there are many like, but this one... is MINE!

When I was a young lad (& I WAS, too! Honest) I recall the U 505 passing thru the canal here, on a barge. It was quite an attention getter. Later on, I ended up in Chicago, and toured it. Quite a sight. It used to be outside on the waterfront. I understand it has been moved inside now.
Seen some pretty weird stuff go through the canal, by times.
Whenever a military ship passes thru, it always draws a crowd.
The Germans came through a few years back with 2 destroyers & were open to the public for tours.
The tall ships come through every year..thats quite something as well

It will amaze you. How those poor bastards endured life like that sure astounds me. Only guy that had an actual "bed" was the Capt.
I head for the whole crew..& that's where they hung the meats!
After touring that sub, watch Das Boot
