That is a nice setup. Kind of strange at first glance but pretty sharp.

Much nicer than the Brit parade sling setup. Just a regular Khaki one with white "Blanco"* glopped all over it! Then you had to polish the brass ends & hooks to get the excess Blanco off.

Thanx for the help Sham.
I was sent this sling by a friend in the UK. (He paid quite a bit for it). Since I don't use her much anymore - except occasionally for parades with the Legion - I figgered I'd get her a proper dress for the ball. (Last time I shot her, was at Cookies for our 1st meet & greet) If you look closly - theres an error in the sling. At the top..the brass rivets are backwards. (bummer, man) Now the old sling - with blanco goop all over it can go to Cookie.(soon as I remember where I stuffed it) |

What really gets me about that rifle, Hoadie, is that it is a known veteran of Vimy Ridge. Most of us wonder what the ol' gals have seen.... in this case, you know. That is simply stunning.

yeah Bear..its a bitch I don't have "paperwork' to prove it.
But I WAS engaged to the guy's Grandaughter - @ one point. I never met the man..he died before I met her. Never seen a photo of him, either. Susan said that his facial wounds were so bad that he refused to allow a picture to be taken of him - ever - upon his return. Apparently half his face was gone..& he did die a bit young (late 1960's) |

For him to sustain major wounds to the head like that and return home at that time is a triumph in itself. It makes it even more understandable why he would have wanted to buy his rifle out. I have read many a story of Canadians buying their rifles out of service when they were discharged. Most countries that was just not a possibility but obviously up North they understood the connection of a soldier to his rifle at that time.

Bear-that always puzzled me.
Why would a country allow the sale of its most modern / current battle rifle to the public? But - it happened. (Maybe because of the wounds?) Its like my N05. When Barry Thyne was de-mobbed after the Mau - Mau he purchased his rifle, as well. He brought it with him when he came to Canada. That's how I ended up with it.(Sat above his doorway in his rec-room for years. Covered in dust & dirt. When I gave her a bath - she was the Belle of the Ball!) |

It was normal to sell off rifles back then.
When I left I was offered my "match" rifle, a No4 Mk1 (T). It was darn near brand new as we'd ordered 4 of them after finding they were still "on the books" at Central Stores. They arrived wrapped & "new" we had to unwrap & clean them before we could use them & our old No4s were pretty "tired"! They even offered to hold it till my Civvie "ticket" got issued, act as a referee (witness) & provided the required "letter certifying training" (Usually done by the club secretary after a 6 month delay). How times have changed! |
