Due to the lack of available powder in my area I have been researching what can and can't be used for loading.  I am loading a 185 gr lead bullet and I have found data for 4227 IMR which I have used and like. However I am running out and can't find any. I have noticed that 296 has the same burn rate or real close, has anyone used it loading for 303?

the LGS has alot of this and if I can use it I am going to get several pounds..

Win-296 like H-110 was specifically designed for use in magnum pistols, 357 s and 44 Magnums. It can be used in .410 shotshe!!. However there is a general caution about using it for other application. Apparently reduced loads of it can cause dangerous pressures. There have been enough horror stores going around about it, that those who reload shy away from it for anything but its intended use. That said:
                                               H-110 Loads For Cast Bullets

The RCBS Cast Bullet Manual Number 1 says "Yes".

If it'll work in the 308, I can't imagine why it wouldn't work in the '06 or 303.

Rifle .30-30 Win.

Powder        Starting Wt.(grs.)       M.V.(fps)   Pressure(psi)         Max. Wt.(grs.)   M.V.(fps)  Pressure (psi)
H-110              11.0                  1223              ?                              13             1432              ?

187 gr. bullet

H-110               13.0                  1478              ?                                15             1633              ?

Rifle .308 Win.     175 gr C/B bullet

Powder        Starting Wt.(grs.)       M.V.(fps)   Pressure(psi)         Max. Wt.(grs.)   M.V.(fps)   Pressure(psi)
H-110               15.0                  1440             ?                                 17             1569              ?

I've never attempted to load any of these, or load  .303's with H-110/W-296, I have other powders which are less worrisome to load with. I found them on another forum, and have past them on, in the event you may be given to experiment. It's always best to start from some type of given than to make a bad wild ass guess.

One of the better powders I have found for a cast bullet in the 303 is Blue Dot. I load 17.3gn under the 190gn bullet for about 1800fps. Not position sensitive, it needs no filler and  is a very good performer with a similar 17.2gn load is equally effective load (at 1900fps) in my 7x57 with the 160gn bullet. The formula for blue dot in an case size  is from 20% to 50% of case volume and it is equally beneficial from my little 20VarTarg (20-221 fireball) to the 6.5 Grendel max  and through to the 404 Jeffery all with the same formula.
Fill the case to the mouth and scrape it level then tip into the scale and weigh. 20% is the starting load and 50% is the max and works for all the various case sizes with any bullet weight.bullet weight

I use w231 and titegroup  4-7gr for cast 90-300gr bullets
and h4895 for reduced jacket loads and full pressure loads
28gr h4895 reduced and 40gr full powder. hodgdon site has info on reduced loads using this powder. max load x .6 for jacketed and max load x .5 for cast.

No fillers, no problems, over 500 shot, no need to tip the gun up first. load and shoot as if any factory load.

Look up "the load" by ed harris (c.e. harris) he used it alot in 303 and 3006. I run low enough amounts even a double charge is fine... fast pistol powder and cast bullets.

Also a compressed load of imr4831 could work

Hodgdons website lists loads of titegroup for the 308 at 8gr 180gr bullet 1200fps
Good for non gas checked lead. also hodgdon speaks alot about how the powder doesnt mind large cases with very little powder laying downthe side of the case.
