I literally found a no4 at my ranch. Nobody knows where it came from, whose it is or how long it had been sitting where I found it, so finders keepers I say. Rusted to he!!, dirt dobber hotel in the mag well, dirty as all get out....3 hrs (total work time, but really the next weekend) later I was shooting it...after a full disassembly and cleaning, the thing is in GREAT shape. It took about 20 patches of copper killer to get it all out, all of them bright green. I am thinking that and the mud dobber plugs kept it from rusting inside.
I am gathering lots of little misc parts to get it back to stock. It has a sporterized forend, so I bought the upper hand guards and rear ring. Still need front and rear bands, sling mount/screw, magazine, rear sling mount/screws, sight guard with screw and a full lower forend. Also need the bolt disassembly tool, thats the only part I couldnt get to come apart for inspection, although the gun operates very smoothly and the barrel looks great. I see that there are tons of parts still around for this so I dont see any problem getting it fixed back up, but if anyone has any goodies they want to sell/give away shoot me a pm. I am really amazed at how simple the gun is and to be honest it is just flat out bad ass. I have some other WWII guns and goodies, so this will fit right in. |

Great to read how you found it Shadams!!
Can you post some photos or tell us where you found it? (As in, out in the thicket, under a barn??) I sometimes dream of finding stuff like this! There is a bloke down your way that has a lot of low-priced Enfield parts at times. PM me and I'll see if I can find his contact info. Richard.

I'll check "the Box" and see what I have. If it is a No 4 Mk 2 (or 1/2 or 1/3) I have a complete and matching stock set. The forends are different than the No 4Mk1

So the story has unfolded since finding the rifle...
So my grandfather passed away in 2006....my dad and uncle have been griping about how my grandpa's m1 carbine had gone missing. They said they think one of the former ranch hands took off with it. Fast forward 10yrs give or take and my Dad, brother in law and I were having a cleaning day at the ranch throwing out crap and my brother in law was cleaning stuff off the top of a big cooler, the kind like they have at a gas station that all the sodas are in. We have one up against a wall for drinks and stuff. Anyway, he's throwing down rakes, old water hoses, straw hats, hula hoops, all sorts of random crap that has been accumulating over the years and says "Hey, there is an old rifle up here!" He hands it to me and I have no idea what it is. I can tell it is an old military rifle but didnt recognize it immediately. It was filthy dirty/rusty and full of mud dauber nests. Immediately my dad says "hey, I bet thats Papa's old m1!" No, this is a bolt action, an M1 is a semi auto..."yea but it looked just like that"... So this gun has been "sporterized" and at first glance it does look a lot like an m1, esp if it had a mag installed. So I did 2 minutes of research on google and realize its an Enfield no4 mk1. I start asking qouestions and my Aunt tells me that her Uncle was a prison guard stationed in England in WWII, and when he came back he must have brought the gun with him and givin it to my grandfather. My dad and I are certain this is the missing gun, and we suspect one of the ranch workers stashed it up there until the coast was clear and must have forgotten or wasnt able to come back for it.. Anyway, the rear L flip sight was broken, found this ladder sight online, looks awesome. This thing shoots great, I at minimum need to pony up for a mag, but right now moneys tight after christmas so it;; have to wait a bit. But at some point I wanna get this thing fixed back up... |

Nice find. It certainly looks to have cleaned up well. And the barrel hasn't been cut, so you could take it back to full military style if you wanted to by putting a new stock and associated bits onto it.

Looks great. It's certainly cleaned up well.
It appears to have been drilled for a scope mount on the left hand side of the receiver. |
