I think entirely too much, but take a squint at this picture of two different magazines for the #4/5:

The one on the left is the one that came with my 1947 #5 (Faz), and is serialized to that gun. The one on the right is a recently acquired specimen, no serial number evident.

Any particular dark and mysterious meaning behind the "partial" paint job on the second one? Different supplier, different year, originally destined for a #4 instead of a #5?

Or just "one of those things"?

I'd guess someone repainted it in the gun.

Painted or repainted, it certainly looks that way. They would have played he!! getting the old paint stripped off of it though...

Oh I don't know I've seen some mag that have had a hard life look like the top half.
I can't understand why you'd only paint the bottom though? laziness maybe?

well - here is my take as no one else has offered it - the magazine was a proprietary item , fitted to the rifle and meant to remain , the fact that it was detachable is totally obscure to the contemporary idea that they are somehow dispensable or interchangeable ,

thus your numbered item is the one of value , should you choose to use another instead of charger loading - fine , but it was not designed for this , intended for this , nor is it acceptable within the traditional enfield ranks , that said we are a tolerant bunch and we welcome all ,

nuf said , im off my soapbox ,

Square 10 - I'm well aware of "that"! I have a metric ton of charging clips as well. Just trying to understand what the "new" magazine may have gone through.

I don't have a definitive answer but I have seen magazines painted this way in the past. Could be several reasons as mentioned but laziness seems most likely.

Just how many chargers are in a metric ton ?

I like Canadian made chargers myself.

Made by Hoadie's friends the Gnome.
Always looking for military manuals, Dodge M37 items, books on Berlin Germany, old atlases ( before 1946) , military maps of Scotland. English and Canadian gun parts.

I guess we all know a boatload then. It's a unit of measurement.
