Honkytonk,this one's for you.
I decided to cut up one more magazine, this time not as short as the first one. I figured because the short one will only hold four boolits,if I leave an extra 1/4" that should allow for that fifth boolit. Guess what!? It doesn't. If you want a five round magazine,it's going to have to be flat bottomed. The only way to get the same angle as the ten round magazine is to make the cuts identical top and bottom but,and I've tried this twice now, you're not going to achieve the five round magazine, only a four. From left to right: ten round, the new four round, the old four round. I've tried everything so far to get that one extra boolit in it. It ain't going. As you can see by this picture the three different sizes yet,the one in front and the one in the middle will only hold four rounds. The new four rounder looks good in the No5 however... |

Four in the magazine one in the pipe? Perfect for hunting. To be quite honest, on a running deer, if it hasn't dropped after two, I stop. Four Rd mag is plenty!

I have a pretty used magazine follower spring and I thought that if I cut away the last bend that might help with getting that fifth round in. Nope. It works in the flat bottomed one though. This is just my opinion now,so take this with a grain of salt. If you're wanting a five round magazine for hunting, you can always take a 1/2" piece of hardwood or aluminum, fit it to the bottom of a ten round magazine and,POOF! You have a five round magazine. The two magazines that I've made with the round bottoms took a total of seven hours to make. Three hours and thirty minutes a piece. That's without filling in the tiny weld holes. I cleaned them up but, they're not perfect. I call it,"the fifty foot paint job"
It looks good from fifty feet away. I'm using a cheap little wire feed welder too and that might have something to do with the time it takes. The short mags look good. I just see alot of wasted space towards the bottom. |

To be quite honest, for me anyways, at the range or hunting, a 10 round magazine has about six or seven bullets worth of wasted space. I love the iconic look of a 10 rounder, and I think you captured it with your 4 rounder. That's the one I'm going to build! Again, Goosic, thanks for leading the way.

Let me get some measurements for you. My Santa Fe is 5 rounds & round bottomed. It protrudes very slightly from the No5 sporter stock.

Shamu. Not sure if this is what your talking about but before I gave my nephew my Dads Parker Hale Lee Enfield with a 5 round magazine (it came with the rifle when he bought it in the 50's) I drew an outline from a No4 10 Rd and inside that the outline of the 5. The bottom angle on the 10 Rd is considerably steeper than the five. Both are round bottomed.

Did some research and found the issue. After the welding is done, don't forget to clean the sl*g off the inside of the magazine, and don't forget to take a file to any protruding pieces of metal bits as well. Also, you might need to file and smooth the little tabs on the sides of the magazine follower. The original measurements I did, were correct. I now have a five round magazine and a six round magazine.

That's what she said!!!
I put the follower back in and it went so far and stopped. It didn't dawn on me to do it to the other mag, until a few hours ago. And then I looked inside the magazine and saw the sl*g. Dremel tool,a file, some cussing. Now I know what to do to make this work. I'm making one more,(a five round for the No5) and I'm done... ...maybe... |

Nice work! I can appreciate how such an easy concept is so difficult to do. Cut the mag down and weld a new base plate to it, simple right? maybe not...
For a hunting rig, I made a flush mount mag, it turned out to be a four rounder.
It is not easy to do neatly. This was my first attempt at shortening one, it took me a while to braise that perishing bottom plate back onto the body. I have been given some excellent suggestions and guidance on how to make it easier. My quest has been to find something to replace carbine mags on my restorations. Original mags are getting expensive IF you can find one on the loose. Two types of original mags are of interest to me, the six round military one with a flat bottom and the five round 'fish belly' one with a curved bottom as used on Lee Speeds. Hence my interest in the Sante Fe mag, it is the closest to a carbine mag that I have seen, but I think that I could probably make something that looks closer. Another project...... |

I made a flat bottom one, looks similar to a Parker Hale magazine.
I just finished my new six round magazine for my No5 I personally believe that it looks very nice in this rifle. |

As a newer member to the sight, please take my comments in stride. In my humble opinion, Goosic, you are spot on with your magazine! Retains the iconic "look" and, I believe, keeps the legend alive. Again, in my opinion, flush mount magazines are trying to make a rifle look like a modern rifle. It is not. That's why it is a legend. Thank you.

I like a flush mount on my LE sporters. With the shortened barrel, the point of balance falls right around the mag well area. That is where I like to grip the rifle for a trail carry. With the cut off removed and a flush mag, it is comfortable to carry in either hand.

This is the only Custom No4 Enfield I own that would not look good with a rounded bottom magazine. The flush mount magazine lends itself to the lines of this rifle.
