Well, you have all heard that my friend bought my M/H years back when I was in need.
Course now - he won't sell it back...BUT.. We been talking & he has said he would trade for my Vimy Vet & throw in some cash, as well. (That won't happen - least not yet) But then he says if I could come across with a L/E in full military nick, in VG condition (with the sling etc.) I could get my M/H back. OK..whos got what up for grabs? (Emmm, that would hafta be in Canada only-at this point.) I would hafta look at the new import rules for vintage firearms, & get a ruling thru RCMP, I guess. |

Hoadie. Pardon my ignorance, but what is a Vimy vet? Also, my only experience with Martini is Dirty Vodka Martinis. Ice cold vodka with the juice from a jar of olives, garnished with olives on a toothpick. I need a drink...!

Hoadie. I've read alot about Vimy Ridge. No Allied force could take this long elevated ridge that Germans had held for years, reinforcing and solidifying. It was the first major step in defeating Kaiser Whilhelm. General Arthur Currie. Canadian "Shock Troops". Massive Canadian artillery bombardment prior to "walking infantry". My father-in-law's dad was a Canadian Artillary drover bringing artillery she!!s up the rutted muddy roads prior to the attack. I had the honour of talking to him three times before his death at 96 years old. I believe this action actually made Canada a nation.

The trees & grass have grown back over time, but the landscape of Vimy is forever altered. It looks like the back side of the moon, rented by a golf course. I used to pass through it visiting friends in the North of France. It a creepy place, a bit like Culodden.

The action in the two days following, were bigger, & still carried by the Canadian troops. But you never hear about that.
When the British High Command had failed previously, they ordered the Canadians to try. They refused...unless they did it THEIR way, with THEIR plan. The Brits were flabbergasted! What cheek!! They did it OUR way, & carried the battle. There was a small statue offered by Legion, recently. ($100 IIRC) It has the men climbing the hill(done in great detail) with the words of a British General inscripted below: "In those minutes, I believe I witnessed the birth of a nation". How true. There was a survivor that returned from both battles. He had a farm. He was impressed by the grove of trees adjacent to Vimy. They were blasted to he!! in the battle after Vimy. He went back - gathered some acorns & brought them home to his farm. Those trees produced acorns - which are now being distributed to Legions that will take & care for them @ their memorials. We have some planted at our main memoril cenotaph, & they are growing well. Decendants of the Vimy campaign. Puts air in my chest every time I go there. Lest We Forget |

it is one of the great battles - it has recently recieved some recognition , but there were so many its unfair to think that any is diminisahed or overshadowed by another , in this case he has documentation to proove that rifle served at that location at that time , a rare thing woith any rifle let alone an enfield but there are some very much coveted examples ,
