IIRC there were no real Ishy #5 carbines.
Most were fantasy guns reworked from No1 MkIII rifles. Its important to figure out as the wood will be completely different. Can you post pics of what you have? Look at the rear sight, the No5 will be like this, but the No1 will be on the barrel. |

I believe the carbine to be genuine. It was manufactured in 1967. Has the alloy butt plate and the 800 meter barrel front sight for 7.62 NATO. It's not a no5. Will try to send a good photo.

and since the no5 was a shotened/lightened version of the no4 that should help in the ID , the reciever has to be of the no4 variety , the barrel will have the lightening cuts ahead of the reciever ,
there was an aussie no6 built on the no1 rifle base but those are so rare that i doubt any went to india ,

As I said this is a Indian manufactured gun from the rfi.
On the wrist band there is the Indian crest then the word rifle,7.62mm 2A1,R.F.I 1967. The carbine is 40 inches long. I'm not in the states I'm in the UK so not a navy arms conversion. |

As a guide. I have a Ishapore MKIII and I had to fit new wood after an accident. The forend and hand guards were no problem. When it came to the butt stock, I had a new, unissued No.4 stock available and it went on with no issues.
I therefor assume that if yours is a converted Ishapore MKIII you will be able to use a No.4 butt stock. OK you will have to modify the butt plate fitting if your gun has a proper carbine stock.

I honestly know of no RFI legitimate #5 carbines. I also know of no 7.62 Carbines, they should all be in .303 Brit.
If its not a No5Mk1 its not a "Jungle Carbine" but some fantasy gun IMO. |

Its a 2a1, it should have full wood, the wood is a bit different then normal no1mk3 wood. The barrrel channle is wider.
It should look like a no1mk3 but chambered in 308. It has been sporterized is my guess. You can find 7.62 no1 fore ends on ebay. They usually go for less then 303 fore ends. |

Exactly. The internal dimensions differ between the various marks & models so its important to get the correct wood or it won't fit.
If it says "2A1" then its a modified curt down Indian 7.62 Version of the No1 MkIII SMLE, #5 wood will definitely not fit. Sorry, but I found this while looking for something else. “If you see a barrel-mounted tangent
sight, the rifle is a fake. If you don’t see lightening flutes on
the barrel knox form and lightening cuts in the receiver, the rifle
is a fake. If it has a No. 5 flash
hider, it’s a fake. If the barrel
band is up within a few inches of the flash
hider, it’s a fake. (Or a thinly-disguised “replica,” if
you must.) |

as stated the 2A1 [and 2A] was originaly a full length SMLE type rifle , this was shortened to what it is after , not manufactured as it now appears , as such you need to find 'newer' 2A1 stock and cut it to suite , or refurb to an original ,

You have an RFI 2a/1 converted to look like a jungle carbine.
Get a stock for RFI smle and modify that to fit. Top pic. is a genuine No. 5 'Jungle carbine' the lower rifle is an Ishapore 2a1 converted to Jungle carbine status, done in the after market.
