I finally got out and shot my Santa Fe 1941 Supreme the other day, and the ProMag 10-rounder was as bad as I'd been told it was. So, I'm looking for an original magazine. Problem is, I plan on hunting with this rifle so the magazine can't hold more than 5 rounds. GunBroker has an original unissued Savage 10-round magazine, but no way in he!! am I going to buy that to modify. They also have a 5-round Japanese-made magazine which my research tells me was made for Santa Fe. I haven't found anything that says they're junk, but neither have I found anything saying they're as good as the originals. Should I pick it up?

You can easliy do a non-permanent (read drop in) conversion to make a 10-round mag a 5 rounder.
I'd get the real 10-rounder & block it to 5 with alloy or wood bolted to the she!! through the drain hole.
That should be hunting legal just about anywhere.

Well, I found that the 5-round mag capacity limit is only for autoloaders, so a 10-rounder will be 100% legal without modifications. So I guess I have to decide whether I like the original look, or the (almost) flush look better.

I'd go with whichever works more reliably. I don't think Bambi is going to read you a treatise on "rifle cosmetics"!

I've heard these remarks about the ProMag magazines more than once. What is the issue with them? Do they need adjustments to the feed 'ears'?

Great thing here , We dont have a magazine restriction... If we want to use a 30 round mag in our AR or AK platform to hunt with we can... only reason I would use a smaller capacity mag is the issue with a large capacity getting in the way !!!
Son in Law got this info from the WL&F agent ... saved to his phone !!!
only mag restrictions we have here are for water fowl and its 3 rounds !!!

Rhino...dude...if you need 30 rounds to hunt deer - your not much of a hunter!
Even in my 10 rnd Enfield, I only carry 5.(couple xtra in my bag)
Course, weight is a factor as well. Carry that all day, ANYTHING to lighten the load...

Did not say I needed 30 rounds to kill a deer , just telling Y'all that if ... IF I wanted to use a 30 rounder it was legal here ... and I did say that a 30 rounder does get in the way... so We use a 20 rounder instead ... or if I can find the 10 rounder we would use it .....
As for hunting... I have used my first Enfield with out a magsince I didnt have a mag for it !!  And I got a deer with it ...

The ProMags are just "not right" internally, its more than an adjustment that's needed. I've also heard (but can't confirm) that the metal isn't springy, but soft & bendy so adjustments don't last.

I have had Pro mags fail on me in several different calibers !!!  I had some for the 522 H&K 22 cal clone...they worked for about 6 or 7 loading's then the spring collapsed and the rifle started jamming !!
Same thing with other Pro Mags that customers brought to the range ...50 AE , 9mm Browning ..... all failed to function , and from what I can determine ...its the spring that fails after some time !!!

Possibly , if you know of a place that makes springs you could get them to build some new springs after discussing with them whats going on.... when I worked at Exxon I had to get a spring built for a trip on a Turbine due to not being able to get it from the manufacture any more !!!
I wish I could remember the name of the business , But they had me come to their shop and discuss what was going on , then they built a few springs and I tried them out until I found the one with the correct tension !!
One day when I think about it I will take some of my pro mag springs and go back to Baton Rouge and see if they will make some for me ....

I emailed the guy in South Africa recently who was making the 5 and 10 round Enfield Mags in both #1 and #4 configurations.  He has 10 rounders, but said that the springs for the 5 round versions didn't come out right and he was on hold.
I'm still waiting for him to get back to me as I want two 5 round mags.

My #4Mk1* LB which was a PH Sporter when I got it, came with a Santa Fe 5 rounder and it feeds flawlessly.

As far as Pro Mags are concerned,,, broadly speaking they are junk.  I have had several and none of them have ever worked in any gun I used them in.  Particularly bad in Mini 14's!

I avoid them like the plague !

I would however snatch up any Santa Fe mag I saw, instantly!

Well, I ended up buying both of them. I'll use the 5-rounder for my shooting & hunting, and just hang on to the 10-rounder in case I ever get a rifle in full military dress. It's an unissued, unused Savage according to the description, so I think I'll keep it that way until I need it.
