i have one more cowboy shoot this year paid for and scheduled - etched in stone , i fixed the motor home and if i can get it paid off ill be able to do a third next year maybe, but for now two will be enough this year , i am looking forward to it - it got rained out last year , expensive camping weekend with two of my best friends so i did not care ,

the year before i had revolver issues - i replaced all of them now , went from cimarons to rugers for all three of my main and backup guns , kept the taurus [my first purchase that is one of the slickest you will ever handle] so now all have transfer bars instead of firing pin studs - i know , not very traditional , but at least they keep going when i ignore them and im in a match , having three guns out of four go down was not a nice weekend , so i replaced the revolvers , another expense but better now that a few years down the road when i cannot .....

ive not got the same fondness for the shotguns so im still beating up my old stoeger double barrel coach gun , it has given me an issue once but was an easy fix , i always have my 1911 winchester 1897 pump as a backup and it never fails even if im slow with it , im still deciding if i will cut that one off or leave it original length - i do shoot it for cowboy trap , either way it will work for wild bunch should i decide to jump into that in the future ...........

then i looked at the rifles and decided i needed a couple more , i had one , lord knows why that has not broken by now , knock on wood , so i fulfilled the dream of having a rack on the wall like the old sheriffs office had , except i wanted one of each vintage in it , so i kept buying , im only needing a 94 marlin at this point to make me happy , maybe this year ill find that one .............

im going to shoot my henry/winchester 1866 this one , i shot the winchester 1873 last one and the henry 1860 the time before , my analysis is ;

that the hand hop with the 1860 was a major distraction , im never going to get used to not having a forearm on the rifle or that moving magazine follower , as much as i like its vintage look it will never replace the others - but ill not part with it either , its a fun rifle , i love shooting it just not my first choice for a match .....maybe a local match , not the state shoots ive been shooting ,

the 1873 i shot at the last shoot may take a little getting used to but i think beyond the weight difference and that visual round bolt distraction she might actually be a substitute for what i started out using , most CAS/SASS shooters use these but i did not start there because i failed in my research at the time i was buying my first guns , its a big investment - i had little money- i grabbed what looked right for the value , might just be me but the draw on the lever
 seemed longer to me , im sure i was imagining it or i think so,

i started with the winchester 1892 , it operates well for me and has a bolt that "looks" substantial to my eye , its what i started with , ive always used and what ive depended on for all these years of shooting in spite of neglect of cleaning and abuse on the line as well as subjection to the weather i shot in , she still works fine ,

but this time ill shoot the 66 , it is weighty like the 73 , has the same round bolt and ive not really shot it except for trials at the range i work at on weekends , it is no more appealing than the case hardened steel 1873 but the brass frame looks fine and weighs in about the same , the wood might be a little nicer but im not into that with working guns , thats for collectors , i do like it to look nice just not the priority with these , im looking forward to giving it a go

Couple questions. What caliber are your rifles? Second question is what are the caliber restrictions for the CAS/SASS competitions? I know so little about that stuff.

mine are all 45colt , as are my revolvers , you see a lot of 32/38-44/45 and all of the traditional black powder cases , , both rifles and revolvers have to be pistol caliber , any combination you want is fine , i just foind it easier to only load one caliber ,

revolvers can be any single action of the  period  , the 73s are most common , but you see schofields and then of coarse there are the BPs of the 1851 navy & 1860 army variety the 1858s have charm and all barrel lengths show up , gotta load five in each of two for a stage ,

rifles are pretty much all levers but the colt lightning pump is allowed , gotta be able to get 10 in it for a stage , all that i mentioned are common as are the marlins of that era ,

i see both 12ga and 20ga in abundance , ive seen a few 10ga and an occasional 8ga , the young kids shoot 22s and 410s , you see doubles - mostly coach length but a few long ones , you see 1897s regularly , and ive seen some of the 1887 lever version at most shoots , stage usually requires 4-6 but on occasion ive seen 8
