OK. here we go.. picked up a 66 ishapore, 2a1, at a gun show. it looked good everything thier. owner said he had fired it, no problems. only thing I questioned was a non matching bolt. but seemed ok.so find a box of winchester 7.62&51[white box], do the held down string trick for the first try.no problem brass looked good [slighty generous chamber]so took a couple of sighted shots, hit what I was aiming at.4th shot the bolt head jumped the rail.so.on inspection the rail doesnt look bad, the bolt head maybe the suspect[ its groove could be two worn].any suggestion on a direction to proceed would be appreciated..Thanks

Check for side play between bolt and rear side walls.
A too small diameter replacement bolt body or spreading of the rear sidewalls might allow the bolt to swing outward far enough for the bolt head to jump its track.

If the bolthead jumped its track on the opening stoke when all the way back, a broken ,missing, or weak bolt latch could be the problem. I had that problem once, the screw head of the screw holding the latch in place had been buggered so it couldn't be tightened. After getting the screw out I cut a new slot in it and it worked fine after tightening up the latch.

Hey,thanks for the info, I think your first comment, about the bolt body dia. may be correct..there is a little more play then my other rifles. will check that more closely..

Check for side play of the bolt head to the bolt body as well. Badly worn male and/or female threads (or simply a poorly fitted bolt head)allows side play and tilting of the bolt head.
If sideplay is present try to determine which is worn, or if both are worn.

There may be no single cause to this problem, but rather a combination of causes.
A small amount of side play of the bolt body may be coupled with wear and side play of the bolt head to cause unacceptable looseness. The groove in the bolt head lug may also be worn or out of spec.

I have heard of a loose fit of the bolt head lug being repaired by bending the lower lip with hammer blows to tighten its grip on the rail.

Brian Dick Limited may have 2A boltheads.
