It is supposed to snow 5" here tonight and winds of 30 mph. Guess it is time to once more fire up my ol' '78 Chevy 1 ton 4x4. It is fun to play in the snow with her! Sorry, just bored today and thought I would share that off-topic tidbit Smile

..up @ the cabin, I had made a friend. Ole Ernie Pilatzski. He had his dad's ole '47 Chevy 4X for plowing his drive. Thing is..Body was removed, so was box & everything else. Just a seat on the frame. Plow on front, & an ole flat head power plant.
The ole guy was lamenting to me one summer, he couldn't find a set of good feeler gauges..& he needed to set the tappets (He was getting stressed). I showed up next weekend with an unused quality set..he was exstatic. I can see his point..aint much stuff left around any more for the old equipment...but there's lots of old stuff in the north country.(I guess that's why they push 'em off into the bush to let 'em die & rot). You could (will) get an awful lot of power out of the old flat heads!

No one anymore knows how to deal with flat heads (including me), but they do generate phenomenal power when set up right. Here when the snow is deep and the winds harsh and most of the newer 4x4's are stuck, I can hop in my ol '78 and get where I need to go and pull people out. They just don't make trucks like that anymore. Most people look at her and think she should be in the junk yard, but I keep her tuned up and ready. She may not get many miles put on her but she is invaluable when the snow is deep!

Flat-head is pretty simple, actually.
Most (older) farm tractors are flat heads.
Back in the 50's my dad's gang used to race @ the local dirt tracks. They all had flat-heads.

What I learned of flat heads was from a close friend, my "mechanic mentor" who taught me a lot. He drag raced flat heads in the '60's and he always said they were under-appreciated. He always said they had to be tuned up right to get great power and if not kept tuned up they were straggling dogs. That's how he always put it anyway. He passed some years back and to this day I wish I had more time to talk with him about engines. He taught me a ton but I know he had more to pass on.

Turns out we didn't get as much snow as predicted. About 3" it seems, hard to tell since the wind blew it around so much. But not bad overall.

My M37 has a 230 flat head.
Always looking for military manuals, Dodge M37 items, books on Berlin Germany, old atlases ( before 1946) , military maps of Scotland. English and Canadian gun parts.

Nothing sounds as good as a well-tuned flattie either!
Whenever I go to a car show, I look at all the old Fords. Sadly most have small block Chevy's installed, but you will sometimes see a flat head v-8.
Harley made the 45" flathead up until 1973, IIRC, in the Servi-Car. You still see one of those occasionally.

Yeah, the small blocks are a dime a dozen now so you see them in everything. I am working on a '63 Chevy C20 pickup and I plan on keeping the original 292 straight 6 in it just for something different.
