I just got my first Enfield about a month ago and I never figured out what type/variant it is or where it was made. Hoping you guys could help! The markings above the trigger are from top to bottom-
(Crown symbol) G.R.I ISHAPORE 1935 SHTLE III (sorry for bad photo) (sorry for bad photo) Why does the bolt look like this? Possible pitting? It's right where the serial number should be. |

Ishapore is the Indian manufacture. The model is a No1 MkIII* as it does not appear to have the magazine cut off fitted. However I cannot see the * on the wrist photo. Maybe just due to the photo quality.

Its not pitting on the bolt, as per se...& the serial number - which should be the same as that on the barrel- is on the back of the bolt handle

after the war the mkIII* trend went back to the mkIII [not sure india ever followed the LOC as direct as others] but that one is closing in on the prewar years if i see correctly , it could well be a mkIII without the cutoff or a refurb that lost it , or a lotof things - we need to see more of the markings i think ,

Sorry for a long wait for pictures of the markings, never had time to get back to you guys. Here are some pictures of all the markings I could find, there is a marking and number underneath the sight and a marking on the side of the sight protector that says RFI 178.

That looks to be a rather clean looking Ishapore, before they started slathering them in that horrid black paint. Have you shot the rifle?

thinking the same thing but then at that point in time the production had not quite gone to war requirements , there may well be a cutoff in the second photo - but the closeup required has not been provided , im still saying really nice rifle at this point , far nicer than my indian mkIII was when i owned those ,
i gave my indian collection of mkIII , 2A , 2A1 , 410 to a young collector back in the early years to inspire him to go here , if i had a no4 paci i would have added that , i wanted him to follow us down this road very much , i had built a pine box presentation for them , he has that as well

GP99, the close-up we need is a straight on shot of the right side of the receiver. That would tell us a whole lot on this rifle.
A_square, that is amazing you passed so much on to a young collector. Much respect to you for doing that! The Ishapore's are a much under-appreciated subset. |

I have shot 20 rounds through it, it's not very accurate, it shoots low specifically, the rifling is very strong and there is little to no pitting in the bore so I do not know what the problem is there. I haven't benched it to test it 100%. Maybe and probably headspace? Also what exactly is this magazine cutoff, where you can only shoot one round? What's the purpose and what does that do value wise?

These are very nice rifles, and mine is one of the most accurate L-E's that I have ever owned.
(Mine's 1933) It could be the stocking up needs work if not shooting well. Check the draws and see if they are in good condition and sitting tightly against the action. Also check the spacer is in situ where the front trigger-guard screw mounts.. Also have a look and see if you can see daylight between the butt socket and the rear of the fore-end, as the wood should butt up firmly there. Headspace will not cause it to group poorly. May be a worn muzzle, but check first things first. Good luck!

The accuracy of the SMLE depends really on how well it's been put together. Seeing as this rifle has obviously been refurbished at some point. I would not expect the head space to have any major effect on accuracy.
The wood need to have a good equal fit at the draws/recoil lug contact. It needs to be tight into the wrist. The main screw needs to be tight and put the correct amount of load (crush) on the wood to give the necessary up pressure at the muzzle end of the barrel. When I started out with my refurbished No1MkIII*, it shot 6" groups at 50 metres!; that's about 12 MOA! quite awful. After getting all the basic fit correct and finding a suitable load, it now shoots between 2 or 3 MOA which is correct spec for a new rifle. It's a lot of fun fettling these and seeing the improvements at the range. Don't give up just because it's not shown it's potential first time out.

There is light coming through the front of where the wrist connects with the rest of the wood. How do I tighten that?
