Hi all, brand new here. I got a sporterized (sorry, I didn't do it!) Winchester M1917 earlier this year chambered in 257 Wby Mag. For some unexplained reason, they appear to have shortened the magazine box even though the 257 is longer than the 30-06. Even new factory 100gr rounds wouldn't fit. No idea what kind of ammo they were running.
Anyhow, I bought a stock magazine from Apex and it won't mate up to the bottom of the receiver. It's too long to fit the slot. I can't imagine they SHORTENED the action so I'm wondering if there's a big difference between different manufacturer's magazine boxes. The one that it had looks basically nothing like the stock one I ordered, though it has a "W" stamped on it (the stock one has no stamp). It also has a tab on the front top of it that fits into a corresponding notch on the bottom of the receiver. Please see photos. I'm guessing it'll be obvious which is which, but just in case, the one with ribbing/indentations is the modded one. I just want to get a longer magazine in order to run longer ammo! Any ideas? Thanks! ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |

Well, I did some searching after this and made an important discovery: my rifle is a P14 and not an M1917 (though it was sold to me as such). That being the case, I don't think I can use a magazine box long enough to accommodate a 257 Wby round.
Which leaves me to wonder about rechambering possibilities. One caliber I've been wanting to do is a 6.5-284, which will easily fit in the .303 mag box. But the bolt face is too big. Can I use a M1917 bolt, and will it require any modifications?
