Hoadie my dear fellow, when anything is in print... and in 'H.M.S.O.', it's nothing other than gospel. One's duty as a loyal subject of the Crown is to defend to the n'th degree: 'King's Regulations' and all lesser H.M.S.O. publications. Unfortunately, there does seem to be a little difficulty in the colonies as to the mastering of the King's English. However, the odd whipping and field punishment no.1 will soon put that right.

Sarge, thanks for the photos of the two systems. It seems to be a point of confusion that is often turning up, and your explanation makes it all very clear. Good one!

My pleasure Zed. Unfortunately, calling a 'Charger Clip' by the name of its similar cousin (a device with a totally different design) a 'Stripper Clip', is what's termed as a mode of 'Lazy Knowledge'. Its the means by which all similar methods are grouped by genre, and so named. It's not solely the Enfield which employs a charger clip. As just one from the group in comparison... we have also the Italian 'Carcano'... |

'Charger' is the correct official name, but one has to change the long standing bad habits of others in the gentlest way possible! One step at a time.

That's funny. With all the lecturing on correctness, I was thinking the same thing. |

I guess its the same as calling a firearm a gun. It has become the norm. I typically refer to mine as firearms, rifles, shotguns, pistols and revolvers. But I still go to the gunsmith and gun shop. I don't take offence is someone uses the term gun as I know what they are talking about when taken in context.
I do agree about the term Charger or Charger Clip vs Stripper Clip. It is obviously more descriptive calling it a Charger Clip. For many years I was a forestry manager. When felling Eucalyptus we have a gang of women who strip the bark off freshly felled logs. They are called strippers as opposed to de-barkers, which refers to a mechanical device for removing bark from (mainly) pine logs. In this PC world (or where politicians stamp their authority) things change. For example here in SA the government has this annoying habit of calling pupils (or students) learners and teachers are called educators. So we do need to take somethings in context, but also educate (not teach) people on the correct terminology. We are all learners (not students) of life. |
