Hi all.  I bought an Enfield today at a local gun show.  It is a No. 4 MK1.  I'm sure I'll be popping in quite often to pick your brains.  May post some pics after I get it cleaned up.

Have my first question.  The furniture has what appears to be a think layer of "something" on it.  I cannot see the grain of the wood at all.  Is this normal or is this cosmoline and in need of a good cleaning?

Hey Dexx, welcome to the board!

First off, can you scrape the coating off the stock with your fingernail?  If it comes off and appears to be almost wax like, it's probably cosmoline.  If it's a shelac or something, you'll need to use some kind of gentle stripper. I have used citrus stripper and have had no problems with it.

Just my .02 cents worth.

I used a citrus cleaning product on a small part of wood.  What came off on my rag was purple-pinkish looking stuff.  Don't think that's original equipment.

Hmmm, looks almost like someone tried to do a quick paint job on it!  I haven't ever seen cosmoline look like that... but then again, I haven't seen everything, yet.

It comes off if you scratch it with your finger nail.  I also lightened it up with some citrus cleaner.  It's definately some kind of junk.  I just wonder if I should keep scrubbing or not.  Opinions??

Well, I'm a firm believer that if you're not causing any harm to the wood, and you can make it look original again, then do what you need to do to make it right. Just do whatever you need to do to keep the wood safe.

Hey Dexx, have a look at the post "picture for John"  it is almost identical to your rifle. Now put some double boiled linseed oil on it and enjoy shooting it after getting a good smith to check the headspace for you. Nice job of getting the goo off of it.

Your local hardware store should have it but be sure you ask for "double boiled linseed oil".That has a chemical that helps cure the finish faster as raw linseed oil takes forever to dry. Later and happy shootin' ,John

I got mine at Home Depot.  They also have JAP drier, in case you can't find any double boiled linseed oil.  I have never used JAP drier, but I know a few that have used it and swear by it.  You just need to pay attention to the directions and mix it according to directions.

I found boiled linseed oil but not double boiled.  Have to check Home Depot next.
