One thing I did notice after I started reloading boat tails, and I think several members explained why, is that at short site in distances (50 yds) my Enfields shot the same groups with flat bottom spitzers or BT's. At 100 yds, I am getting consistently "slightly" tighter groups with the flat bottom. With a lighter powder load (36 grs of H4895) I'm now using, can I expect slightly wider groups with the BT's? Maybe their better for longer shooting?

H-T,

I don't think at 100 yards that many bullets have become fully stable.
Only way to tell accuracy potential , is fire at a distance, say 300 or more yards.

Look forward to your results.    (Thinking when replying, about the "compensation" we talked of in another thread)

I probably chose the wrong  projectile for 100% of my shooting. Our range has a nice 100 layout, maximum is 200 yds and kinda sketchy. I'll probably never get to see the potential (or lack there of, of the BT.) Thanks Pukka!

Might be that individual barrels (condition, bore/groove dimensions, muzzle wear, throat wear, etc.) may affect bullet flight differently.  Both of my No. 4's shoot the HPBT bullets very well (Sierra MatchKing and Hornady Match).  I tried the Sierra 180 gr. spitzer flat based and it strung the group vertically quite badly at 200 yards.  That was with 38.5 grains of Varget, so the charge may have been a bit underpowered.
I think it's more about the bullet quality than the type of base; particularly in a good barrel.

It also takes a lot of groups shot to find the true mean behavior.  You really can't judge a load based on a few 5 shot groups.  It will tell you if it's bad, but not how consistently good it may be.
