hey folks. new old guy here. just picked up a j. carbine. im not good at posting or taking pics so i will have the wife post some later. info is on left side of receiver no 5 MK1ROF(F) 8/44 A3284 . bolt is matching num. NP 303 2'22IL 18.5 tons on barrel. there are some markings on the tang but i cant read them. finish and wood are imaculite. barrel looks great. there isnt a scratch or ding on it and it has a bayonet thats in very good condition with 355 etched on it. i picked it up from a older gent from church that befriended me. he showed me his extensive collection of old hunting and military rifles. after telling him i regretted not buying a jungle carbine i saw about 20 yrs . ago . he pulls this rifle off the rack and tells me he'll sell it to me for $500. i near fell of the chair. i looked on gunbroker and the ones on there that are in alot worse shape are going for $13 - $1700 without the bayonet and original sling that this one has. he told me he bought that gun from a old ww2 marine for $!5 back 50 yrs ago and its been sitting on his rack since then. was a little dusty but cleaned up real nice. id like to hunt it but its too nice to bang around in the truck. i will shot it though. pics to come soon.

Very nice! Looking forward to the photos. Do you plan to shoot it?
Hopefully it was properly cleaned before it was put away 50 years ago. The Marine that owned it prior to that should have known to clean it immediately after shooting it. |

Welcome! From Paris France.
It sounds like the gentleman has been very kind, with the price. Maybe invite him to the range when you try it out. It might well make his day!

No.5's are expensive out my way as well. I saw what looked like a really nice unrestored original as issued condition example at a gun show in Calgary. Matching numbers and all that jazz but ....the butt stock had a lengthy CRACK from the wrist socket to the middle of the butt. Price tag? $1,450. I pointed out the crack and the seller just shrugged and said reproduction butts are available. I walked away shaking my head. I heard from another guy the rifle had later sold! That's without the bayopnet too. Those pointy bits out here sell for $750 CND.

ive seen original bayos online for as high as $500 american the same condition as mine. i didnt expect him to give me the bayo also. i offered to pay him more for it but he said he knew as a veteran id appreciate it so he was happy about the sale. he knew before selling it to me what both were worth.
