Didn't want to clutter Zed's thread (baby) with a semi-related question.

My No. 5 has the refurb date stenciled on the stock.  The wood is really dark and I'd like to try pulling some of the grime out of it and cleaning it up a bit.  Is there any safe way to do this without harming the paint in the refurb date?

The accepted safe way as far as I know is to wrap the wood in paper towels, then place that in a large black plastic garbage bag and lay it out in the hot sun for a whole day. The gunk will be absorbed into the paper towel from the heat turning the gunk into a semi-liquid state. Worked for me in the past.

depending on the paint being applied over the gunk you may still loose it , id do a color match and be prepared if you wish to save that detail ,

change the paper towels from time to time , and place in a exposure to the sun with a bit of wind screen for maximum effects

You may have to wait a bit for that "Hot sun" it's bloody freezing here!
