G'day Mat ! Now first up ,I don't see you'll go to far wrong with using the Winchester 180gn ammo for Moose . Limit the range of your shooting out to about 200yrds max ! But Please ,get a couple of boxes of the ammo & practice ,get to know where the rifle shoots try standing supported & off of a rest . At the end of the day bullet placement is vital a rifle that shoots a 2 to 4inch group is plenty accurate enough for something the size of a Moose . BUT!!!!!!! Bullet placement is everything
I know I'll probarly sound like a interfearing Old Fart ,but there are several things to be considered , There will probarly be a different impact point between 25 yrds & 200yrds so try a group at 100 & 150 . Also remember that when you see that Moose the Old nerves are going to set in ! Know where your rifle is shooting ,conferdense in your rifle is everything & trust me after over 40yrs of shooting for a living ,I've learnt some hard leasons ! Don't be afraid to ask questions ! I of course have never Hunted Moose , but there are those here who have & their a wealth of information ! I've Hunted Camel & Water Buff with the .303 & trust me it's up to the task (Ok it was always a little marginal on Buff ) Dave |

I the 180 grain projectile shoot very well with the original sights designed for the 174 grain HV MK VII ammo. The trajectories are very similar.

Both rounds shoot very well and if used correctly will provide excellent proformance. Has Hoadie stated where and what has a lot to do with bullet choice.

Thanks for the info guys :)
am gonna get practicing with that rifle seriously i need to get used to it. Gonna try both ammo again and all the tip/trick you give me :D. Also, the ammunition bullet on the winchester is Power Point, i think it is softer thant soft point(i dont know really), but this wont be a problem for penetration? or i should get something else(hollow point?)? i guess they are pretty similarPower Point/Soft Point. Also i am on Canada, quebec. Ill be hunting at the lake st-jean. Where we will be hunting there is clear area. we probably have like 2 miles of clear view :| and then there is tree all around and not much mountain. I just have some problem witht he rifle for the last ammuniion to get out of the charger and go in the barrel :S. The last ammo just keep stuck in the charger. I also have one more question about the rifle(i should have my own topic sorry) The sight when it is up there is a rule on it, do this is helpfull to use it? and is the rules for Yard or Ft? As you guy see i dont know much :P but i like this rifle pretty much yet, i dont plan on changing it at all :D Thanks again :D |

There is always great debate on the Soft nose /Hollow point issue ! You can debate until the cows come home (trust me on this ) Personally I use a mixture ! For smaller calibers I prefer Hollow point as I find they don't have to hold together as I'm shooting a thin skinned game, where as on large Game I prefer a Soft nose projectile as they hold their weight & the expansion is better controlled. I like ammo with a moderate verlosity when using Soft point ammo as it has time to really open up as it penetrates!
The major problem when using Factory Ammo is you are limited to the type or manufacture of Projectile that is on offer & the Manufacturer is a slave to the Number crunchers who run the company IE: make the stuff as cheap as possible !!!!!! Reloaders are blessed in the fact that we don't have, that problem we can tailor our ammo to suit the situation. As a Pro shooter due to the volume of ammo I used to shoot I had to reload due to cost ! These days it's not a matter of cost, it's a matter of getting what I want out of a round! Dave |

I was shooting a 150 grn. two weekends ago (got a 12 point on the west coast of Florida) and I had one of the shell caseings split near the top . I was useing some Winchester ammo that came with the rifle . I don`t know if they are reloads or not . I was useing my Savage #4 mrk 1* ; and as far as any one can tell I`m the first one out side the factory to put a round through it ( at total of 50 rounds so far) .

Hoadie Hoadie Hoadie,
we live in a kinder gentler Canada now, they are called firearms not weapons.
And by that I mean, thats what the Gearbox instructor kept trying to tell me when I challenge my firearms tests.
