Nice job CM a 5x4. nice work!  I can't wait to get my girls and my boy out huntin w/ me.  I still have a few years before that will happen.  Must be a great way to bond.  So what grain round did you use and at how many yards?
I am getting ready to buy my first, a No.4 Mk.1.  My brother and my dad shoot a .270 WSM and seem to think that a .303 would not do the job on an elk.  I have them convinced on a buck.
I haven't made my purchase yet but am looking at one for $150.00.  It seems in good shape however the #'s don't match on the bolt and receiver.  It is stamped US Property and made in Vermont.  I would need to have the headspace checked out.  Is there anything else to look at before I buy?  I am excited to buy my first rifle but want to make a informed purchase.  Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks---Ranger-366

Mismatched bolt is no problem Ranger, Just make sure the headspace is correct and that both locking lugs on the bolt bear evenly when the bolt is closed. Checking the fit of the bolt can be done easily and any gunsmith that knows anything at all should be able to do it in less than half an hour.

Ranger - DON'T forget to check the bore BEFORE you buy, as well. As for .303 not up to the job...I wonder how familiar your brother & father are with .303.Fact: ANYTHING YOU COULD HUNT ON THIS CONTINENT, CAN/WILL BE READILY HANDLED BY .303!! & when you hit it - it will STAY hit!!
I suppose they feel 30.06 or bigger is the ONLY way to go?
If your going for Elk, you might want to step up to 180 grn.But before you do - make SURE you know how you & your Enfield shoot together.Spend some time practicing with 150 grn. & then with 180 grn. There IS a noticeable drop, so you gotta be aware of it.
Friend of mine shot a Caribou @ 350 yds - 1 shot, 1 Caribou, with #1 Mk III. The Inuit have NO PROBLEM using them on Caribou or polar bear.
As long as you know your Enfield - you can take her with confidence, on ANY hunting trip.
(& she wont jam like semi autos, either!!)

here here hoadie..its funny how people think ya need a cannon to bring down large game..its all about  placement of the projectile..i have no fear when goin out that the .303 will bring down anything if its hit right. ask Dave about huntin with the .303  Ranger-366..im sure as hell hes brought down buff with the trusty ol' .303.Smile

.303 too light for Elk?????????????????????? the word 'Crap' comes to mind!!!!!!! Hell the problem these days is everybody belives the hype put out by firearm manufacturers ! & their Gun scribe toadies !

A few examples of the prowness of the .303 as a game getter

WDM bell used the .303 for elephant as did many others !

The New Zealand Gov issued .303 to their Deer cullers & 2million Deer  were shot before they lost count

Canada  has a long history of the .303 being ued for damned near everything

Here in Auz ,when I went into the Buff shooting market (pet food ) we could use any cal we liked providing it was a .303 as this is what the proccessors issued !

because the enfield sights are callibrated to millsurp ammo wouldnt it be worth re-callibrating the sights to suit your loads? ive shot the enfield with millspec ammo, 174grn hollowpoint heads and 180grn FMJ heads. there was no noticeable difference between the 174s and the millspec but there was a noticeable drop with the 180s. i would imagin this effect could be quite serious when using the .303 for hunting with the wide variation of bullet weights.

USSRL,

Yes that is why I like shooting my No4MkI with a Parker/Hale adjustable sight you can change the slide increments to compensate for various  trajectories.
