One thing that always amazes me when shooting any of my Enfield .22 rifles; is the amount of crap in the bore after shooting a few rounds of .22LR ammo.
The rifles all remain  accurate and if cleaned fully will need time to recover their normal performance.
But it is hard to understand how a small lead bullet can shift that much dirt going down the barrel and not lose accuracy! Both SK rifle Match and Eley Team ammo are very good in my No8, but both are filthy.
Anyone know why the .22 ammunition is so dirty?
It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice!

If I remember correctly, it's because .22 rimfire has such a large amount of primer compound relative to the powder, and the primer leaves a lot of crud behind. Not sure of the details, though.

And, of course, they're often lead bullets, so there's lead and lube to add to that.

They almost always have (the ones I shoot) some kind of lube on them. And when on gopher Safari, I tend to just throw a bunch in my jeans pocket, not helping much!

All of my various .22LR rifles are the same after shooting. .22LR is dirty ammo as far as I am concerned. My Savage MK2 suffers from repeatedly stuck fired she!!s in the firing chamber and I have to pry them out with a tool I made. Upon looking at the empty she!! casing it's fouled badly and so is the firing chamber and bore. A good clean and I'm back to shooting. This happens to this MK2 Savage only after around 50 rounds.

Its an externally lubricated bullet, thats why.
Its actually the only rifle I own that I use a bore snake on!
It kinda-sorta cleans, but not really so its perfect for .22rf as it leaves some residue behind!
I only do a full clean If I change bullet (& so lube) brands.

Thanks for the replies.
Competition next weekend so won't be cleaning anything until after then; it's shooting nicely at the moment.

Many successful small bore competition shooters that I know almost NEVER clean the bores of their rifles. On the rare occasion that they do they then shoot a  session the bed the rifle in.

I've heard that but just DON'T use old, corrosive ammo.

All I generally do is push a dry patch through the bore just to get the loose dirt out. I have not done a proper bore clean on any of my .22's for a couple of years now.

When you think about how much crap the bullet is pushing out of the bore, it's surprising that the accuracy is not affected. It would be interesting to examine a fired .22 bullet after firing; suppose you'd have to shoot it into ballistic gel, or a swimming pool to prevent damage though.

I cleaned the bore of my Cooey Model 82 Military Trainer after a range day. It shot great, but as it's a new (old) rifle to me, figured I should clean the bore. After reading posts on this very thing, I went out to the range again this morning. At 25 yds, pattern was worse than the first time I shot it. After 20 rounds, it got back to sub 1/2" group at 25 yards. At 50 yards, I was nailing pop bottles every shot. Lesson learned. Do not clean the bore!

"....I've heard that but just DON'T use old, corrosive ammo...."

agreed , but i dont own any corrosive 22 ammo , had best luck with blazers in my kimber 82G , my nylon 66s run anything including the remington thunderbolts but ive only shot eley match in my brit trainers and cooey 82M ,

i do not think either of my nylon 66s have ever been cleaned since new ,

the only one ive had an issue with is a mossberg 151M , it likes to jamb with most everything , but its still fun to shoot this old full wood trainer type rifle ,

With my old .22's, I found hot ammo (I use Yellow Jackets in my 10/22 Ruger) tend to produce a little blow back. Hence in these old single shots, I just use a modern regular LR hollow point.

i agree , i have lots of standard velocity for my old ones - that is the majority of what i own , i only have a very few that would date arter the turn of this century and an equal number that date to before the turn of the earlier one , i also have a lot of them dedicated to 22 shorts , including an 1890s vintage S&W derringer that i would only shoot CB caps in if inclined to shoot it ,
