I have seen references to oiling the casing for the round. Is this necessary or helpful?

Only for proofing the round. NOTHING ELSE. Its a way of forcing the locking lugs to take the full force of the firing shock. commonly known as a "Blue pill" NOT something to do routinely.

Definitely not recommended to ever oil the cartridge case, or leave oil in the chamber. Doing so will overload the bolt locking lugs and will eventually cause them to fail.
Lubricant used during resizing of cartridge cases should also be removed before firing. I do this by wiping each case with a paper towel and tumbling the cases after sizing and trimming to length. |

There were a few machine guns invented that required the use of a cartridge oiler, the Schwarzlose and the Japanese Type 3 Taisho come to mind but it was an evolutionary dead end.
