I have a buddy who has a tripped planned for Mazatlan in 2 weeks. He and his wife arfe thinking their trip may be cancelled. Personally, right now, I would not entertain the idea of a Mexican holiday, the situation down there is too fluid. It could get better but...on the other hand, it could get a whole LOT worse.

No way in God's Green Earth I would ever go to Mexico. I would go to Cuba first.

Mexico has always been dodgy.
I had friends who were retiring there buying a small resort by pooling savings & opening it as a  private "Clothing Optional resort".
The seller led them along took everything he could squeeze out of them for a few years & then tried to blackmail them over some of the business arrangements He'd made!
They fled the country with a suitcase each & he now owns the entire resort all fixed & furnished in their money.
When I was working down there a friend gave me this sage advice.
DON't pay the Federales for security, they will re-sell you to the local banditos.
Instead go into a local bar an ask for the contact for El Jefe for the area. Ask how much the "tax" to cross his territory is. Pay it. Its probably less that the Frederales would charge anyway. It usually comes with a "guide", he works for the Jefe & will warn al the other banditos off. The benefit is he's also local & will have a ton of local knowledge they won't have & you'll get taken to all sorts of places only the locals know about.
Big smile

Don't shoot till you see the whites of their thighs. (Unofficial motto of the Royal Air Force)

yes , mexico /US border and helicopter gunships possible incurrsons as we are now at the modern day version of the poncho villsa war i think , trump has promised to stop the flow of drugs as well as the flow of humanity that invaded our country - he is going to protect the US , he has put canada on notice as well , the crap coming over our boarder from the north will get stopped as well ,

i get it that there will be drug addict's that will suffer , but maybe they will find a way to become contributers to society rather than leaches

My sister in law is on vacation in Mexico, I think she's supposed to be going on to Belize.
Not sure if she's out yet.

I stopped going to Mexico over a quarter of a century ago after getting a shake-down from a couple of vatos pretending to be police in Puerto Penasco.  All they had for a uniform was a hat with 'Police' on it and I was about to tell them in Spanish to "Eff off" when a local told me that the real Policia 'deputize' friends and family to shake down rich gringos for alleged offences.  Your options are to pay up or go to jail.
That, and we saw at the small airstrip on the way in to town a couple of civilians with M16s guarding a small Cessna.  Previous to that I had been to Mexico several times without issue but you could feel the change in the air.
The tourist towns stopped being safe from cartel violence soon after as reports of robberies. rapes, and murders became more and more often.
Now we're hearing that the cartels may have MANPADS and who knows what they might use it on to teach the Federales to stop cracking down on them.  Shooting down a civilian airliner full of Gringo tourists would have a chilling effect on tourism, no?

I spent my honeymoon in P.Vallarta back in 1985.
Had issues then..couldn't see it getting any better over time.
Apparently thers 26,000 Canucks in mexico right now. (According to gov'y).
They are arranging evacuation plans in case it gets worse.
