started life - literally with kurt , a german shepeard that would only alwo people that were deemed acceptable to come near me as a baby , if he sensed that you might be wishing ill , he was 90lbs  of fury , he herded me around when i learned to walk , i lost him when i was six , it was what set my feelings , i loved that dog and loosing him was the first real loss in my lifetime ,

his replacement fritz was stricken with a disease - distemper- that made me watch him slowly waste away , that was in the 50s , by the 60s i had sam who would kill anything that came near me and he did , sadly he was not as discriminating as kurt was - he was a rescue dog that had been shot in the face with a shotgun , he loved me but he didnt allow anyone to trespass people or other dogs - it was the other dogs that caused the problem ,

his replacement was a female  that was more my siblings dog than mine by high school i was gone most of the time

fast forward to collage , my exwife - wife at the time brought home one black peekinese , we bonded then she found a second and we bonded , then we divorced and she took both that was my first exwife and last dog , second exwife never wanted a dog and neither did i ,

my current wife and i had been married for over 30 years and only discussed a dog when we took care of my SIL & BILs dog when they were on vacation - that dog passed and they got another , it didnt get along with their cat [not his fault - the cats fault] but we ended up with him

as much as i never wanted a dog again this one is very special to me - no doubt that he is my wifes dog first and foremost but he is mine second - i am hoping he outlives me , i dont want to go through that loss again

I have not had a dog for all most two years now

Had a dog all my life, except when I was in the Army, my parents took care of my dog. Even got me another one when he died.

The next fur beast must be:

Good with Grandbabies.

Put up with cats.

Be a good farm dog.

Enjoy a good ride in the truck.

Have a good sense of humor.

Not be a digger.

I've been blessed with a few great dogs in my life, the first a Bull Mastiff bitch we called Cindy who never left my side when I wandered away from the house as I was wont to do when I was four years old.  She never bit anyone....didn't have to as she made it clear no one was going to get within striking distance of me.  I remember one time when an older kid came flying up on his bike yelling "You're Doug's younger brother aren't you!  I'm going to beat the crap out of you!" I assume he had a beef with my older brother who was quite tough so the coward was going to kick my much smaller a$$ except Cindy inserted herself into the discussion and sent him packing.

Another wonderful dog I owned was Lobo, a large male Germen Shepherd who helped me take on a gang of drunken teenagers who attacked me when I confronted them about throwing beer bottles into the lane we shared.  As I re-arranged the face of the biggest of them Lobo kept the rest at bay when they tried to gang rush me.  Lobo also saved my pretty female neighbor from an assault that likely would have ended in a rape.  Lobo liked her and would accompany her when she went for her daily walks through the forest nearby.  One time four thugs jumped out of the bush at her and Lobo went to work.  None of them dared come within 10 feet of her and she was able to extricate herself from a very dangerous situation.  It was gut wrenching when he had to put him down years later.

Lots of great dogs followed - a Brittany Spaniel I trained to hunt pheasant, a Golden retriever for waterfowl, finally the kindest hearted dog you ever saw:  Schnitzel, a miniature Dachshund who we loved for 18 years.  I don't think I want to go through the emotional turmoil again we experienced when it came time for Schnitzel to be euthanized.

My current furry beast is named Wally. 1/2 Pitt Bull, 1/2 black lab. 10-1/2 years old and still vigorous. My only other dog, Buffy, was a cocker spaniel/duck toller mix. Very loyal both of them.50 some years later and I still miss Buffy. I miss any and all dogs that were a part of my life in some way or another. They have unconditional love for us, are totally dependant on us and I like being his provider and best friend. God gave us dogs for a reason.....

im with you canuck , they are loyal and devoted and i also like being the provider and person he can depend on for his needs , my wife keeps him clean and well groomed , i keep him fed and taken out when the need comes up , we both offer a secure place for him to nap and play when that comes into his mind , right now he is sitting by the front door waiting on her to return , been up to see me a couple times to complain she is not here , he likes both of us here and if anyone goes or both he expects to be taken along

when i was about to be born my folks bought a sheaperd puppy , he kept me company and protected me as i grew up , he let me pull his ears and tail and hearded me when i learned to walk , then watched very carefully anyone that came in contact - would have gotten nasty if anyone deserved it , but he was one of the most loving dogs ive ever owned , when a neighbor girl tried to hit me with a stick he locked onto her arm , but he didnt leave a mark , just prevented the blow , my best friend for six years ,
he hated thunder storms would hide near me watching and waiting , he died during a terrible thunderstorm when we were on vacation , it left a real impression ive never really forgotten , thats what is scaring me about our current situation with my wife ......but hes only just five so i expect him to be around a long time , the dog he replaced in my in-laws home was 15 and doing fairly well till he wasnt

I've also had some great cats too.  Joshua lived to a very ripe old age that I estimate to be 26 years.  I inherited him when my wonderful old spinster aunt passed away and he was already around 4 years old.  I had him for 22 years so his age of 26 was pretty close.  I felt that as long as Joshua was alive a little bit of my beloved aunt was still around.  He would wait at the end of the driveway for me to get home from work where I'd pick him up and he would wrap himself around my neck and commence grooming me.  He loved to fall asleep in my lap and had a very endearing habit of taking one of my hands and starting with the pinky he would lick every finger to the thumb and back whence he would hold the end of my pinky gently in his teeth and purr himself to sleep.  I think it reminded him of his mother's teat and he found it very soothing, even as an adult cat.

I have a indoor / daytime out door cat that is pushing the twenty year mark.

Mr Mato is getting a bit thin with problems walking but stills goes out during the day to oversee his Kingdom / yard.
