Hello gang
I'm going to be doing some range shooting in the next few months (if the snow ever leaves). Just wondering if you people use ear muff style or plugs? |

I use muffs myself but a lot of people use plugs.
We have a few different types of hearing prtection at work and it comes down to preference in the end.
Some people will tell you that muffs offer more protection than plugs but depending on what you buy, this may or may not be the case.
Hearing protection is rated by the amount they will reduce noise (in db).
The plugs we use at work will drop the noise level by 25db, so, if you have 85db noise then they will let you hear 60db. This is of course dependent on them being correctly fitted.
Custom moulded plugs offer better protection.
When buying, look at the rating and buy the best you can afford.
You can also use plugs in conjunction with muffs for better protection if you like.
Remember too, muffs are easier to put on and off if you are taking them off and putting them on a lot. Also, once you take plugs out you should not put the same plugs back in, its a matter of hygene.

When shooting handguns I use muffs but use plugs when shooting rifles. The muffs tend to get in the way when I shoot rifle. I had RSO duty today and it was a balmy 29 F when I got there.

I tend to use muffs-most of the time.They're easier on & off,& quicker.I do use plugs as well(Henry has seen fit to supply me with enough for the next 20 yrs or so.) Most of the plugs get used @ my cabin for deer camp.(They're quite effective vis a vis the snoring that goes on!)I wear nothing when hunting.AHEM! Let me clarify that...I wear NO protection when on the hunt. Wait a minute ...I wear no HEARING protection,when hunting.(Whew! almost gave Tony an in, there!)Anyway-it all comes down to personal preference.Just make sure you do WEAR it.

I use a pair of electronic shooting muffs at the range. This allow normal noise and talking to be heard. Then when a sound is encountered over a preset DB it is then blocked.

I tend to wear both. I had a work related accident many years ago that caused me to have constant ringing in my ears. My doctor told me if I didn't want it to get worse I'd better be careful. So, I use the foam disposable plugs under Pelton muffs whenever I'm shooting or running the cahinsaw. I only wear the plugs when I'm sleeping. My wife snores pretty bad.

I use the the disposable foam inserts when riding the Motorcycle. Loud pipes may save lives but not your hearing.

Hoadie[/QUOTE] Hoadie, I used to ride a canary yellow Norton and people tried to hit me all the time. I spoke to a guy on a bright red Norton and he got cut off all the time. Then he joined the local PD and started carrying a browning on his hip when he rode... The couldn't see his bright red bike or his orange jacket, but they'd pick up on the small wood grips on the browning at about 20 yards and back the hell off. I think people can see you OK, you just have to make the care. ( I have never heard of a group of Hell's angels getting cut off in traffic) ED |

When riding you must use these two ruls to be safer
1. Ride like your invisible, that no one can see you.
2. Ride with the attitude that everyone driving with four or more wheels on the ground is out to kill you.
A wise old biker gave me those two rules

Ear muffs for shooting, ear plugs for motorcycling long distance (don't bother on low speed trips).
loud pipes do help when filtering through traffic, but a lot of car drivers are so insulated in there vehicle that they just don't care. As for Hi Viz jackets, they may help a little, but if they don't look, it doesn't matter what colour your wearing. Riding a bike requires a healthy dose of self preservation to get you home safely. You start with a full bag of luck and an empty bag of experience; the idea is to fill the bag of experience before the bag of luck runs out! I have a 1995 Triumph Speed Triple, a 1985 Yamaha XT500 and a 1973 Kawasaki Z1 that is needing renovation.
