I know, I know…………………………………….but because of my varifocal glasses I find it difficult to shoot with any consistency past 100 mtrs ( 50 if I am 100% honest!!) and having just joined a club that has use of military ranges to the SW of Bordeaux with 400mtr and possibly 1000mtr ranges available I have had to do something to improve my chances of hitting the paper.

 

The mount is from S&K in the States and fits without any gunsmithing  so the rifle can be returned to open sights any time.

 

The scope is a Meopta  Artemis 2000 4 x 32. I shall be taking it to the range on Monday 22nd I hope and will post the 200mtr results afterwards.

Nice looking rifle. I have that mount on my No4 Mk1. It seems to be pretty solid.

I know exactly where your coming from on the Sight challenged problemCensored I have to use scopes on near everything these days & am looking at Red Dots for my scrub rifles & carbines ! I've had to wear Varifocal for several years now & it took me a fair while to get used to shooting with them esp at night !

Nice looking rifle there.
I found that if you're getting varifocal lenses they are available in several different "grinds" You might want to take a look at what's called the "computer" style of grind.
These have a bow-shaped middle disatance area ground in the center. It looks a bit odd when you look off to the side, out of the corner of the eye, but the distance works out very well for shooting as the irons are in the area where the lens is set up for computer monitor distances. (Right about the same distance as a front sight, coincidentally.)Clown

My eyesight problem is that not only do I wear Varifocals but I also have a 2½X prism in my right lens which really buggers the job up Embarrassed

Anyway, bore sighted it today in the garden at 50mtrs and will be shooting it in Bordeaux tomorrow at 200mtrs with a new load. Was hoping to chrono the rounds too but I can't get my hands on the clubs chrono so that will have to wait till after Christmas. Should all be done in time for January's 400 mtr day.

Slight delay in processing the pics that I promised but here they are.

 

The range I use is near the airport of Bordeaux at Merignac.  It is one of the National ranges and can hold all kinds of competitions.

 

Here is an aerial photo of it showing the 200mtr range that I use.

 

 

This is the entrance to the office and internal pistol ranges.

 

 

Here is a view from the No: 3 position showing the 50mtr and 200mtr targets

 

 

SO -  A 50 mtr group AFTER we realized that the scope mount had not been tightened up properly after bore sighting in the garden at 50mtrs and had to start again!!

 

 

Here we have the 200mtr target with 11 rounds in it. That is all I had with the test load but I am certain that I can tighten this up once I sort out a cheek piece and improve the elbow rests. This was shot sitting unsupported on a slippery wooden surface so elbow position was not consistent

 

 

Doing some re-loading on Monday  so I can get some chrono readings of the new load. (Chrono not available from the club for this date)   Probably going to substitute Bench Rest primers for the CCI 200 ones.

Load was:

CASES – HXP

BULLET- PRVI PARTISAN 150grain FMJBT. Actual weights were between 151.1 & 151.9 grains

POWDER – Vectan Tubal 5000

CHARGE – 2.5 grams / 38.7 grains.

Decided to try and improve things a bit and fit a cheekpiece. Because the rifle is an amalgamation of parts to start with there is no real history to mess up.
First of all, find the best place to put one!!



Now for the tricky part!!!

I managed to sneak out to the shed today and start the fitting proper!

 

 

First job was to make sure the rifle as in a sturdy frame so that I could work on it. Having already decided the position of the cheek piece and also having checked that the bolt worked and could be removed it was time to fit it to the rifle.

 

 

I did this using various grades of sandpaper ( Maps of Kuwait to some of the military!!), first by holding a sheet over the butt to find out where the high spots on the inside of the cheek piece were.

 

 

I then used a rolled up piece of sandpaper on an old kitchen roll holder to sand away the highspots.

 

 

Once the cheek piece was ready to attach, it was time to find a couple of screws and mark the butt so it could be drilled with pilot holes.

 

 

I very carefully drilled one pilot hole making sure that the drill was at the same angle as the hole. I then fitted the screw. Once I was happy with the location I drilled the second pilot hole and fitted that screw. Behold, an attached cheek piece!!

 

 

It is now time to finish the wood. I am doing it the same way that I re-finished my Mauser.  First some coats of linseed oil (NOT BOL) thinned with 50% white spirit. That is as far as I have been able to get today. More details later in the week – watch this space
