Hello
On the first weekend of Oct I am going with my Dad to a reunion of his Torpedo Bombing Squadron from the War. This reunion is going to be held on the USS Yorktown, which is now a museum. I think it is in South Carolina. Has anyone on this forum ever been to see this museum? Just wondering how good this museum is? Mark |

I was there April 2 years ago.we stayed on Patriot's Point. They offered to let my unit stay on board overnight gratis-but we declined. We were there for the re-patriation/burial ceremonies for the 3rd crew of the CSS Hunley.
As a Museum/memorial its fantastic! Everything that flew from her decks is there(they tuck 'em away @ night & bring 'em up in day). You can stay overnight on board, & you can eat in the mess, as well.Patriot's Point is (apperently) the world's largest outdoor military museum. There is also a Coast Guard vessel, a submarine & a very well done interactive Viet Nam display there. Its ashort inexpensive taxi ride from downtown to the point...& if you want GREAT food - head out to Shedd's Creek. The fishin boats tie-up longside the restaurants there...Best-BAR NONE-BEST Jambalaya I EVER had!! Dang! I wanna go back....want some company? Hoadie |

Hello
Update on the USS Yorktwn museum. I just returned from five days in Charlestown, South Carolina. I went to the USS Yorktown twice. The first time was on Sunday by myself, I had to see the Tomcat alone and exercise some old demons, I had not seen a Tomcat since 1993, glad I got to see one finally after over a decade. It was so wierd seeing something that was part of my everyday life for three years, then seeing it as a "spectator". I never was around an F-14A without having a sense of "urgency" hanging over me before till then. In a way I felt a bit "guilty" walking away from it. In the back of my mind I think I was still looking for Chuck to pull up with the "huffer" (jet engine starter mounted on wheels to supply compress air to get the rototrs started). I was still expecting Gannon to hook up external electric power. As long as I waited, aircrew never walked out to the aircraft, nor would they ever walk out to this Tomcat again, Sort of a surreal to me, I'm not sure what the "tourists" had going on in thier head as they walked past for a passing view. I had to see this alone. The best way to describe what I felt was something alone the lines of the next to last scene from the 1946 film "The Best Years of our Lives". The scene where the former bombadier is in his old station in a B-17 Flying Fortress that is going to be scrapped. The next day I went with my Dad and his comrades from the War. I got to see his flight jacket on display in the ready room dedicated to VT-34 and the USS Monterey (CVL-26). I also spent a good half hour lurking around the Tomcat again. I had a great time at his reunion, made me grateful that I am a Veteran. I hope that 60 years in the future I get to reunite with some of the people I was with in the Service. I also enjoyed Charlestown, South Carolina. I had spent very little time south of the Mason-Dixon line other than going through A-School in Memphis, Tn. back in 1989-1990. I thought that town is a great place and would not hesitate to return someday. Thank you. Mark |

Glad you enjoyed the tour.
I know how you felt round the old bird. Some years ago the local warbirds museum in upstate NY aquired a Canberra. I had to go & visit. It does feel odd to be round something that you worked with day-to-day as some kind of museum piece.
This one had not yet been rrestored, so it was just hanging round on the dispersal till the museum could get it prettied up & on display. I couldn't resist just hopping in the open hatch & taking a look round from my old post. It was a very strange feeling to see an empty, silent space instead of the crew all being busy with checklists. It did still smell the same though, I guess the rumors about that being crew-related were false after all.

I gotta say that when I was @ Charleston for the repatriation of CSS Hunley's crew-I got treated VERY well, specially @ Patriot's Point.Bear in mind that when I was there there was an international tennis tournament, A national Harley Davidson gathering, & the CSS HUNLEY deal. The town was PACKED & stretched out resourcewise..But the folks were GREAT.i wanna go back as a normal tourist & golf, eat, & drink!!
