he!!o, just wondering if anyone else picked up on the DP rifles that Atlantic had a couple weeks ago? (99 bucks) I picked up 2 (should have been 10!) This is the first time ever buying any DP rifles and i couldnt be happier. Been collecting military guns for 45 years now and would never lower myself to buying anything that wont shoot! IVE BEEN AN IDIOT FOR 45+ YEARS!! Man.. these things are solid and got great usable parts, but thing is, i should have bought more cause i dont want to separate them! Just a cool ass piece of history on their own, DP or not! I need parts so one will get it, but plan on making one into one clean DP for the collection. the description will scare you away, but wont let it scare me next time, if there is one? trust me if there were any left i would be keeping to myself
. Just thought i would ask and let yall know so you could be on the look out for next time. Pic is from the one remaining, the other is already broke down for parts. between the 2 only one swivel screw missing. RED |

I bought one of these a few years ago for parts, found a new barrel when they were relatively available and pieced together a smart shooting rifle from what would otherwise be scrap parts from all over the place. I want to say it was a BSA action body I had on hand but I would have to look at it to be sure. Also, I seem to remember it was covered in black axle grease, the nastiest stuff you ever saw. And sand! Had to patch the draws because they were soft/ punky and other parts like the bolt body/internals and head were all available NOS and cheap at that! Not so much anymore, everything is through the roof these days it seems. Anyway, yes they're fun to have around and do something with for projects. ![]() |

paddy, sorry, left that out but mags are gutted but nice bodies. actually the main reason for the purchase, because showed with a mag. i assumed they were complete. at least bolts are. So...just has the single hole and tact on one side and cleanly done, barrel not plugged. Bore looks good from what i can see. Friend of mine asked could you just weld up the hole after knocking out the rod/plug, and have a shooter? I told him probably not a good idea? and not the reason for my purchase. Just hoping they get some more. but you have to move quick if you want them and most times that doesn't even help! RED

i would never try to make a shpooter out of a DP rifle by doing that - i might consider adding a 22cal conversion to it for plinking purposes if the restoration was well done , never full load 303 again

Looks like it has the No4Mk1 magazine fitted.
A good deal for a complete parts rifle!

I agree, think I'll just put together a shooter for him so he will forget that idea! RED

Yeah, I bought a couple of those $99 DP rifles too so as to have one in my collection and the other as a parts gun.

MODERATORS NOTE: THIS FORUM DOES NOT ADVISE RESTORING TO FIRING CONDITION OF “DP” MARKED RIFLES DUE TO THE VARIATIONS OF METHODS TO RENDER THEM “DP” (drill purposes only) OR THE CAUSE FOR DOING SO. Proceed at your own risk & against the recommendations of this forum.

In the spirit of us all being "cheap" and wanting a supply of spare parts...what parts would we consider NOT suitable to salvage from a DP rifle? I would think the receiver, bolt, and barrel would be the "I wouldn't do that if I was you" candidates and everything else might be fair game? Best, |

Shamu is of course quite right here. We should not promote restoring DP rifles to shooting status. They migh make great wall hangers though.
Common sense applies here, rifles would not have been made DP because of a defective sights, for example.

one will be for parts and one will be the best looking DP display possible! of corse till i need another part? Man, I love these things! its got me fired up again. after some time in idol, I now have the wood to finally finish my 1917 Enfield. Also just picked up a nice 42 Lithgow, first one of those. ill get some pics to ya soon. But... As For the Lithgow, did the aussies have their own slings, different colors, stamps/markings and such? i cant sleep good till i match up a sling and bayo with my new finds! RED

I'd be fine with anything not pressure-bearing. My "Queen of the La Brea Tarpits", 1914 BSA SMLE has a "DP" stamped lower hand-guard. When I got it the "fingers" on both handguards had been either broken or sawn off. It looked Fugly, so I replaced them. Sling swivels, screws & other minor hardware, but nothing more. Bear in mind if you ever sold a rifle with any DP parts it would be a big "WARNING FLAG" to a knowledgeable buyer though. ![]() before ![]() after ![]() |

I think all the ones ever I saw had a hole drilled right through the action ring. Maybe even clear through the barrel with a metallic rod driven in to it. Maybe not even drilled, but burned through with a cutting torch. Heavens no are they good for anything but to tender small parts and maybe some wood. ![]() The last one I had, was band-sawed right in two behind the ring at the bolt raceway(s).I bought it for the fore-end which was just long enough to fit to a Martini body/SMLE barrel. All of them, are pretty much useless junk for the most part with only a smattering of any parts worth a darn for any kind of realistic use or actual service. ![]() |
