Gents,
A good pal recently died up here in Canada, and his brother in the US would like one of his rifles. I do not know at present whether this one is antique or not. If not antique, what is required to sent it down into the "States? Thanks for any daylight on this, R. PS, The "Worth it? " thread made me think to ask you guys!

Methinks that if its a Communist Block weapon, they can't import it any longer. (I could be wrong...once I thought I was wrong, but I was mistaken).
Seems to me Rhino went thru that scenario once upon a time, & it didn't end well. |

Thanks for the link, Sham.
Bit more info; It's a 1902 made Ithaca double -barreled 12 gauge. I think his brother is up for the Memorial service, (Will know soon) so if he is, maybe he could just take it back, as long as he declared his intent?

I don't know Canadian law well enough to make a comment I'm afraid. Can a brother legally inherit a shottie there? Once he owns it I don't see a problem.

Sham, I think anyone can inherit, but if Canadian would have to have a Possession and acquisition licence .
Do you need such a thing in the "States?

I beleave it can be done, maybe??
He will need to have it brokered, thats the easiest way. I had a rifle imported up to Canada from Arizona last year through Aztec Amouries, cost a bit but worth it in the end.. I know thers lots of paper work involved. |

Not in most states. I think CA, NJ & MA you need a "FOID" (Firearms Owners ID) which amounts to the same thing.

I shipped an 1896 Lee Enfield receiver south with zero problem. In Canada, it is non restricted. In the USA it is antique.
I just packaged it up and mailed it with tracking. The onus was on the US recipient to prove its age and antique status at customs. Their ability to own etc. I marked the customs declaration 'Antique 1896 rifle receiver'. They got a phone call, it cleared, then it arrived at their door.

Gents,
The chap was up for his brother's memorial service. With a copy of Bro's death certificate, and a letter from executor, (The deceased's wife), he'd like to take it home with him.... hoping to anyway. (driving across border) I am awful hazy about him getting it to the border, as he has no Canadian licence for one.... Any ideas on this?

Couldn't he get the executor to send it via a company that can handle the paperwork? I know there are companies to get US guns into Canada, but I don't know about the other direction.
Shame it wasn't a few years older, or it would be an antique and easy to deal with. Edit: actually, or would it? I don't remember if shotguns count as antiques here.

1-800-731-4000, is the number to call. I think he`ll be able to get a temp non residence PAL to posses the shot gun, the RCMP will be able to advise on the boarder crossing, the US gov`t will be able to advise on whether the shot gun is allowed for import. lots of hoops to jump through. Best bet would be to call IRUNGUNS, they broker firearms, I beleave in both directions. www.gunbroker.com

I brought in 2 CZ-50 pistols , and a Voere Titan II rifle when I came back state side ! When I was going through Frankfurt air port I was taken down with a pistol stuck into the back of my head as they frisked me , now I was in uniform ! Then I was escorted to a room by 2 Polizie and the undercover guy and they went through my gun case !! inspected the weapons looked at my paper work and asked multiple questions and if I had ammo ... had me put everything back in the case , put security tap on the case and escorted me back to the terminal where I had to put the case in whole baggage, then I got on the plane , and as I was waiting to take off the pilot said we had a delay , I looked out the window and they were unloading the bags , they got to mine and they went through it !! When we landed in Atlanta , I grabbed my bags and gun case from the carousel and proceeded to customs .... When I got up for my turn to declare what I was bringing back, the customs agent asked me to open the gun case.... Well! he looks the fire arms over and asked for the ATF paper work, as I was getting it out my brief case he said those are east block weapons ! I said yes! Used by the Czech secret police ! he then tells me that there is a ban on east block weapons entering the states at this time !!I said I have permission from ATF to bring them back ! Well he looks at my Dress Greens and says he collects military patches and that he does not have a 3rd Infantry Division patch in dress green !! so I rip the patch off and hand it to him ... he says let me check on this , and comes back puts another seal on the case and hands my paper work back and sends me on my way !!!! I still have that pistol today !!! As for what y'all are talking about today, I think we are under another ban for importing Russian fire arms and other such items ... I may be wrong but it would be wise to check ... dont think they will be as nice in customs today as they were 30 something years ago !
