Canberra PR7 Not a bomber photo reccie. A modified version of the B Mk6 which was a bomber. The 'Naner is a drift corrector. As aircraft fly in a fluid medium they don't always point where they're going. You can't "bank" (roll) because it messes up the perspective of the ground images so you slideslip (skid) by pointing the nose into the prevailing crosswind. You dial in the crosswind on the indicator by turning the knob on the bottom (left) & the "string" pulls the flexible 'naner that way cancelling out the effects of sliding which would otherwise give an offset on every frame. That's a bad thing as they are overlapped (usually by 60%) to give the interpreters a 3D image so they can work out things like heights of buildings & so on. All terribly high tech. |
