is it Mark 3 or MkIII? anyway, should a late WWII manufactured Lithgow No1Mk3 have a serial number on the magazine? thanks.

I guess if you want to be correct it's III or III* since that's the way they were marked. Magazines were never numbered on any of the Lithgow produced SMLE rifles, not even the early ones. A late WWII Lithgow SMLE would be a No1 MkIII* and it will have the serial number on the bolt, receiver, nose cap and underneath the forend near the nose cap. Rear sights, and barrels didn't have the serial number applied by late WWII production. They also stopped putting the rifle serial number on the bayonets during WWII. You will come across rifles that went through FTR in the 50's with serial numbers on the barrel etc, not all but some, but magazines were never numbered at any stage in Australian production of refurbishment.

that is great information. obviously I am looking at a potential purchase. It does have serial number in the places you mention although I cannot look under the fore-end. thank you.

The forend will be marked like this if it's the original one it left the factory with. |

ah, yes it is marked there and also on the buttstock. I thought you meant underneath the fore-end as having to remove it.

If you can get some detailed photographs of the rifle and the markings on it, there's plenty of people on here who could give advice on how original it is, if that's what you're looking for.

You are correct A square, Australia reverted back to incorporating some features of the No1 Mk III in new production after WWI but it was more of a hybrid design, or mix of the two. They incorporated things such as provision for the magazine cut off but never went back to full No1 Mk III specifications. That said, by early WWII production right through to the last run in the 50's we were back to producing rifles to true Mk III* specifications and the receivers will be marked as such.
