I see where divers have found a Midget Sub that was one of several to enter & attack Sydney Harbour in the second world war ! My Grand father who was serving in the navy at that time was due to go on leave & was in Sydney at the time & was put to task rolling depth charges off the back of a small boat to get them ! My mother who was a child had travelled with my grandmother to sydney to see him & can remember vivibly the Air raid sirens going off & people telling my Grand mother to run as the Japs had invaded ! My Grandmother being a tough Old bird thought it was a false alarm ! There was a Anti sub net across the harbour but the midgets waited for a ship to enter the harbour & followed it in ! One was a confermed sinking & the other was always a mistery as The Mother ship surfaced up the Coast & shelled Newcastle & then was sunk some time after .

Kinda like the CSS Hunley, during the U.S.Civil war. When it sunk - for the third time..it stayed sunk.
No-one really knew WHY it sunk.It stuffed a torpedo into it's quarry, & backed away.Surfaced-signalled it was OK & was never seen again. They finally found it, in the area where it was last seen @ the bottom of Charleston harbour.(Clive Kussler was instrumental in it's retrieval). I was quite honoured to be invited to attend & partake in the burial ceremony, of the 8 crew.I was in the ranks of the host unit, whom posted the escorts for the caissons for the deceased. There was some 8,000 marching through the streets of Charleston to Magnolia cemetary(Not including VMI Cadets, U.S.Marines & Navy personell) Hoadie |

Yeah Fort Scratchley at the head of Newcastle harbour took on that sub. The two 6in guns in the fort only fired 4 rounds but after the no2 gun fired it's 1st round some bloke left a bucket full of water they scrub the breach out with too close to the "lever breach mechanism" and somehow bent it or something and they couldnt open the breach of it again.
No1 gun had to do the work of 2 guns and it was alternating fire long and short trying to get a zero but the jap sub had left. |

Know that Feeling ! We don't even have a Carrier! We sold the "Melbourne" years ago to China to be scraped & were going to replace it with the ARC ROYAL ! But you people took it off the Market as it was needed to quell that little misunderstanding in the South Atlantic ! (one that you would remember well ) Dave |

Carriers!? Ya wanna see a neglected Navy? Check out Canada's.Shouldn't be hard to do - I think we're up to 7 comabat ships now.(Far cry from the world's 3rd largest post-war).Our last carries? Well, Maggie(the Magnificient(?) broke her back off N.S in 57 & went for scrap. Her sister ship - Bonaventure, was re-fitted back in 68 - 69?. Spent somethin like 23 million then on the re-fit, then sold her for scrap!!!(There was rumours she went to the R.A.N.) Unbelievable! YET - her aircraft are still on inventory & flying.Still bearing her colours!
I dunno..I just live here. Hoadie - the embarrassed |

Tony..Get your flamin eyes checked!!! Its a bloomin SIGN, mate!!(The other side says,"EAT AT JOE'S!") I don't know too many subs that disguise they're periscopes as channel markers!! Besides that - how do you suppose you'd get a sub all the way up the St.Lawerence river, through the locks in Oswego..through L.Ontario, thru the 12 locks of the Welland canal, thru L.Erie, Thru L.St.Clair, & thru the locks & into L.Huron ? Just wonderin...bloomin Englishmen!
