The liberation of Bonneval was mid August. But this weekend (31st Aug) the town held a 75th Anniversary of the Liberation. An impressive military camp was installed in the sports field and a mass of WWII vehicles were touring the local countryside and on show at the camp. We were lucky that the collection of vehicles was far bigger than at Paris a couple of weeks ago.
Here's a few photos! |

Well it's been a while since I posted anything here; but finally got a few photos of the town today.
This is the "Rue de la Greve". The original shot shows the resistance fighters walking toward the far end of this street This the Cafe St Roch. and back in 1944 and the town hall today. and in 1944, flying the french flag! the town centre square today; shows some changes. The small buildings that were built on to the side of the Church have gone; that would be the "Marbrerie" in the 1944 photo below. |

I think the thing that bothers me most in those pictures, and any pictures of vetrans for that matter, is their eyes. The things they've must have seen. Some of the above pictures of GI's, they look about 60 years old and I bet most were still in their early 20's.

It's been a while , so thought I'd post a few more photos.
First two photos are the market square. Last one is I believe looking from under the viaduct,( one of the main pillar's visible on the right). I forgot to get some photo's of present day; must remember to take my camera to town.

I'm curious. How much of the town has changed over the years?
The small French towns I remember from the 1960's & 70's are basically the same except for minor things & repairs to damage & so on. Odd story. I went to Bayeux regularly, not for the tapestry, which Id seen already, but because within a block of the cathedral there was a row of mom & pop stores where I'd shop for French delicacies that weren't easily found in the U.K. back then. This was on a motorcycle & I'd fill the side boxes with extra strong garlic sausage & cheeses & so on. By the time I got back to British customs they were pretty ripe! I think HM Customs gave the newbie the job of checking my imports as some odd rite of passage! |
