Been social shooting from a bench for a number of years and now looking at getting into competitive service rifle shooting here in Aus (non-scoped surplus rifles, such as Lee-Enfields, Mausers, Nagants and the like). I currently have a No. 4 Mk 1.
Prone and off hand shooting is completely new and I am primarily looking to increase my knowledge in terms of technique. So scouring the web for information on how to correctly drive the rifles from these positions, as well as breaking bad habits I have undoubtedly picked up over the years. I find YouTube great but sorting the wheat from the chaff can be difficult sometimes.

Have you heard of a book called "shoot to live"? Its a excellent treatise in shooting habits, positions & much more.

One of the best ways is to watch how the guys who win the vintage rifle matches hold and shoot the rifle. Talk to them, they will gladly offer advice and help. One of the guys who really helped me said that if I beat him in matches, then he knows he did his job coaching me.
Some of the most useful books I have on shooting the Lee Enfield in competition: BGen Barlow The Elements of Rifle Shooting James Sweet Competitive Rifle Shooting Maj E.G.B Reynolds Essentials of Marksmanship Maj Reynolds and Robin Fulton Target Rifle Shooting The last two books are difficult to find, I only finally found copies last year. These guys were Kings and Queens Prize winners with the LE and you won’t go wrong following their methods and lessons learned. Read the books, then read them again. The sooner you get off the bench, the sooner you begin the journey. I must warn you, it can be highly rewarding and addicting! |

Thanks - that was my first post!
I think I first signed up in 2016 or something like that but never posted, as I got busy with a PhD and put shooting on the back burner. I feel like I am learning all over again!
