tonight - they were asking if DNA testing was aripound in 1987 - no it was not but it led me to a further thought ,
we weren't talking or texting in our cars at that point either - didnt get to talk till the 90s and the texting came a lot later , its so easy to forget because so much has changed in our lifetimes , not sure your age but i remember the interstate roadway system being built , the draft and landing on the moon , my parents remembered the depression and war rationing , my grandparents remembered two world wars , the first cars , the first aircraft , and the span am war , as well as the turn of the century two back , you have to put things in perspective ....im mstill wraping my head around that in my lifetime , your grandkids think you dinosaurs , your kids think you out of touch , but one day they will be reflecting back and realize how much changes in a single lifetime , its amazing how far we come |

So true Mike, it takes us years to understand the significance of where we are in the timeline of history. As kids, we think of a year as a very long time and anything that happened a year ago is ancient history to be forgotten.
I grew up in the 1960’s - 1970’s and I remember my great grandfather quite well (my Mother’s Father’s Father). He was born in 1872, just 7 years after the end of the US Civil War. Although as a farm boy growing up in south eastern Ontario, he probably did not know much about the Civil War. At that time, the Dominion of Canada was just 5 years old with 3.8 million people. Great Grandpa Stephenson had seen a lot of modern development. In the early 1960’s, his grandchildren convinced him to put electricity in his log home which was believed to be the reason the house later burned down. In the early 1970’s, we watched the TV show The Waltons. We had more in common with their way of life in the 1930’s than we do with how kids grow up now. I think the only significant difference was we wore shoes and had a TV set. I was brought home from the hospital in Dad’s 1926 Essex. |

I asked my Grandma what was the biggest change in her life as she was born in 1888?
She said indoor plumbing. |

I loved visiting my grandfather's house in the Fifties and Sixties. It had just recently been converted to an oil burning central heating system from a sawdust burning furnace. Most of the sawdust feed was still present, the large bin accessible from the driveway where the dried sawdust delivery truck would pull up and refill as needed. No thermostat, just a rheostat that controlled an auger feed, if you wanted more heat you simply sped up the auger to drop more fuel into the burner. The house was three stories with all the bedrooms located on the top floor, each having a small coal burning fireplace for the coldest nights. Grandfather's last vehicle was a 1939 Nash which he drove for 30 years until his reflexes became too slow and he surrendered his license.
How things have changed! I vaguely remember the furor when the Soviets launched Sputnik but definitely remember every step of the American space program in which I was totally engrossed. The Cuban Missile crisis terrified me as a child because I was sure when they tested the air raid sirens war had started. President Kennedy's assassination disturbed me especially after Lee Harvey Oswald was conveniently killed by Jack Ruby. I was completely enthralled by the Moon landing and glued to the television for days! Very disappointed that the Americans cancelled the SST. Remember going from a black and white TV with only 3 channels and rabbit ears to a color TV and cable. Listening to music in cars progressed from a simple AM radio to AM/FM to 8 track to cassette to CD and eventually DVD before it all became streaming. |

if not for advances in medicine I would not be here.
Twenty years ago quad bypass surgery was not yet cutting edge medicine. Lots of people have them today. I remember when my Father got a pace maker. I told my older brother there was a custom charger to charge it at might. Yes I am a jerk. |

I remember the street being dug up in the middle of a large city so they could run electricity to us. My Saturday job was to take the 3 big 90v batteries to the newsagents to swap for charged ones. we needed them to use out old vacuum tube radio.

Your Mom and Dad have pass over but their ideas live on in you and your children.
Is see my parent's values and my values in my children and a bit in my Grandbabies. I smile when my sons go hunting," out to kill something and put meat in the freezer ". I let my ten year old Granddaughter shoot my Fayetteville rifle off the back porch with a load of cornmeal for a load. One big cloud of thick black smoke. Put a great smile on her face and made her smell like burn flour. She went and took a shower per her mother. |
