Here are some photos of my L39A1 to kick off the 7.62 page on the forum. Shown here with the extra shiney finish that was on it when purchased. And below after removal and treatment with Boiled linseed oil. |

3 of my No. 4 rifles have a hard shiny finish, presumably a polyurethane of some sort. These rifles were used for target shooting in DCRA matches in the 1960’s. One is a Fulton rebuilt rifle, the other two are DCRA 7.62 conversions. I can only suppose that this finish is more resistant to humidity, especially rain, as these matches were usually shot rain or shine. I personally don’t mind the shiny finish, although I would not attempt to put poly over an oil finish either!

If anyone has a heavy barreled No. 4 (L39/L42/Enforcer), I would really like to see a range report with hand loaded match bullets. So get these rifles out to the range! 200 yard and 600 yard groups if you have range access.

If you're curious try this test, carefully on an out of sight place Wet a q-tip with denatured alcohol. Flick till "damp". Lightly rest damp end on the shiny finish. If the finish dissolves its probably "Old London Oil", a 50/50 she!!ac/RLO mix. It leaves a glossy finis but is repairable in the event of scratching with a touch up application. It was very popular among target shooters back in the day.
