First time Enfield owner but have wanted one for a long time. Was aiming for a No. 4 but came across this unexpectedly. I don’t know a ton about them but I am a huge fan of historic rifles in general.

I am pretty sure this is a genuine No. 5 and I am very pleased in the condition it is in. I am on the hunt for .303 ammunition right now

Welcome from Brandon, Manitoba, Canada! Looks like a nice rifle. I'm the flip up rear site, how many yards is it graduated too? A No.5 would be 800, if I'm not mistaken. One quick way, but not definite way to tell if it's original.

Congratulations. Looks the real deal to me, the appropriate lightening cuts seem to be present.
the bottom metal should be "Wasp Wasted", the bolt handle hollowed, & there should be 4 "scallops" to the barrel, just under the hand-guard wood.

Your best bet for .303 is "Prvi Partizan" & get the 180 Gr to register correctly with the existing ladder sight. Don't let the comparatively low, at today's prices, fool you its great ammo & reloadable.

The "battle sight should be to POA at 300 yds, a couple of inches high at 100.
Heres a cheat sheet on detecting real from forgerys.

Thank you Honkytonk, yes rear ladder is graduated to 800. Lord I wish we had real irons like this one still on rifles, what amazing instruments of utility and precision.

Thank you sir, I was planning to order some Privi. I have used it before for handgun calibers, .223, and 7.62x54R with no issues. .303 is a little thin on the ground so I am putting together an order soon. I was trying to figure out the better bullet weight to go with so that recommendation for 180 helps. I saw that the British FMJ load was for 174 grains.

I have a press will need to get dies and powder for it after I generate some usable brass.

I will probably stretch her out to 500 yards this summer after I get familiar with how she shoots.

Nice looking rifle.  The only problem with Enfields is they are addictive!

Welcome G_R.

.303 Mk 7 ball ammunition was in use at the time the No. 5 was in military service.  This was a 174 grain flat base hard point bullet loaded to 2440 fps from the 25 inch barreled No. 1 and No. 4 rifles. The No. 5 with the shorter barrel would generate a lower velocity.

The PPU 174 grain FMJBT load should approximate the Mk 7 ammunition fairly well.

PPU brass is very good for reloading.

Don’t expect match grade accuracy from a No. 5 rifle. Much will depend on the condition of the barrel and how well the forend fits the action body.

Thanks!
The nearest is a 1914 BSA No1 MkIII (No star, but the volley sights & magazine cutoff was never fitted). It's currently sporting a .22 Morris tube conversion.
It Vewwy quiet, wewre hunting wabbits! 20 dB above ambient!
The bullet impact into 5-ply is louder than the shot!
The farther is a very sweet minty Lithgow (actually OA) one.
