I'm trying to fit the extractor spring into the bolt head, but I can't seem to get the spring to stay in position while I fit the extractor. While examining the bolt head, I noticed this hole that lines up with the notch on the extractor spring, and I'm wondering if this hole is supposed to be drilled all the way through the bolt head to where the extractor spring is. This rifle is covered in grime and hasn't had any maintenance done in a while, so I can't tell if this is dirt or metal. Should I try to unplug this hole, or is it supposed to be like this?

Update: I figured it out, the hole is now clear and the new extractor spring had been installed.

Yes, the extractor spring has a small protrusion that fits into that hole, this is what retains the spring in the bolt head. I fit the extractor first, then the spring, tap it in place with a brass punch or flat head screwdriver from the forward side of the bolt head. Remove it the same way by driving it out thru the opening in the back of the bolt head.

You can also use a couple of loops of strong fishing line or dental floss to pull the spring in from the other end. Wrap it round a pencil or something similar to make a handle, grease it up & pull firmly.

I was just going to mention dental floss and saw your post Shamu.
I wrap mine round a small screwdriver handle to get some purchase, they slide in lovely.
