Rust?

   So I have about figured out what we have. Thanks to all of the great information on this forum, thanks. We are going to be working on first cleaning up and then shooting a 1918 Enfield made, SMLE, Mark III(*conversion). All original with matching numbers. This is a family heirloom. 

My first question is where does rust end and patina begin and where does patina end and finish begin. How much cleaning is appropriate and what should be left in its historic state.
