Hello everyone
Mark here again. I got another Pattern-1907 Bayonet last week for $40 (US). It is a Indian made version manufactured at Rifle Factory Ishapore in 1916. It is still full-length (17" blade) and came with a older version of scabbard (oval shaped frog catch). From what I can tell, it looks like it has never been over-hauled, refinished, etc., which I think is a good thing. The throat and chape of the scabbard have been painted black though. Sorry about the cruddy photographs. Mark ![]()

More about the markings...I have a total of four Pattern-1907 bayonets, three of the were made in Blighty, and now this Ishapore made bayonet.
On the three that were made in England, all three have extremely faint markings. On one I can see "1907", 7 17, and faint "Sanderson" markings. If looking at the bayonet at the "correct angle", I can see a "ghost image" of the King's Crown and G.R.. The other two are very similar with having faint markings. This Indian made bayonet is just the opposite when it comes to readable markings. From what I have heard and see (mostly photos on the internet), it seems the Indian made bayonets had decent markings. Are Great War RFI made Pattern-1907 bayonets (just asking about the full-length blades) more or less common? Or are they a bit on the "not seen everyday" catagory? Mark |

Possibly a worn die stamp or it wasn't set up properly. |

One more idea that might explain the difference in markings. I heard that following the Great War many Pattern-1907 Bayonets were re-worked. I think that many were sand-blasted and refinished. I am talking about British made bayonets, not sure about Australian, Indian, and any others (did any other nation actually make Pattern-1907 Bayonets?, my guess is no, but could be wrong).
I do know that the knackered up Sanderson Drill Purpose Bayonet that I salvaged from a chunk of rust has several FTR dates stamped on it, (1923, 1927, and 1935, that I can see clearly), who knows when it was actually made, can't see that date anymore. My Indian No.1 Mk.I** Bayonet (12" blade) started life as a Wilkinson made Pattern-1907. It has been cut down and blued in India. So that might be another explaination for the faint markings. Usually when buying anything related to the Lee-Enfield Rifle I ususally try to find British made items. But I am glad I have some Indian made items, not rare at all, but still different enough that I'm glad I have them. Mark |
