Probably smooth but I wouldn't lose sleep over either/or. I've seen both types on just about every variant from every maker. I think the ones with "Grasping Groves" look better though.

Relative to this, were any of the No 4 Mk2's ever issued back out with the grooved handguards? And were any of the grooved handguards ever made in the beechwood?
