he!!o,

I just recently bought a CLLE (Made in 1898, converted in 1910, and still trying to figure out the markings to see where it was made) and its currently missing the upper hand guard. Its annoying me to heck and back looks wise, but not as annoying as trying to find a replacement part. I have searched up and down online and asked locally to no avail. I'm looking for either original or reproductions. Any direction to the right place goes a long way too.

Thanks.

Welcome to the forum.

As always, we love to see pics of what we are discussing. Pictures are worth a thousand words.

We can probably give you information about your rifle, if we can see it.

There are a couple of options for a rear hand guard. Much depends on how handy you are at the work bench. But we can certainly help steer you towards a solution.

Sorry about the wait, but here are the photos. The woodworking on this is either a reproduction or an refurbished original because it is in beyond great condition. No idea what kind of wood it is nor what stain. Beautiful color though.

I'm not shabby with woodworking (took it in high school for 2 years) so I know the ins and outs to a degree, but I am nowhere near experienced enough with it when it comes to doing find details. If you would have an in depth tutorial on how to make one, I would be more than happy to attempt at it. How would one find/make the spring clips though? My metal experience is very limited as well as the resources needed to make the clips.

Do let me know if you need more pictures or a specific area.

It looks to be an original fore stock and butt that have been 'enthusiastically' sanded. So much so that it has changed their dimensions.

The wood is Italian Walnut and that is its natural colour. Originally it would have a hand rubbed oil finish.

Interesting that the rifle is a Mk.I* with an 1898 date.

From here, the parts of it that I can see look complete and correct. With the exception of the regimental marking disc on the butt. Not sure as to what is going on there. Unit markings at that time were applied to the long butt plate tang which one can see sitting proud of the wood.
Perhaps it is a Sht.LE butt stock and the butt plate is not fitting correctly?

You need the bunny ears to protect that front sight!! The front blade gets knocked about even if you try to be careful.

Anyway, I will not pick it apart. You only got it recently and will enjoy researching it and finding how they were originally from the factory.
A great project and well worth restocking. The sanding does hurt its value a lot.

Can be recognised by two spring clips, four rivets.
